Jenny Lewis (Lucy Brown) makes a welcome but mostly squandered return appearance as this latest series of PRIMEVAL reaches its penultimate episode. Jenny’s getting married, and when her wedding planner is satisfyingly killed by a Hyaenodon in a plastic-shrouded basement that makes one wonder when the parallel universe Cybermen are going to show up, the ARC team swing into action to help their old friend. Meanwhile, Matt (Ciaran McMenamin) is still struggling with Gideon’s (Anton Lesser) warnings about getting too close to Emily (Ruth Bradley) or anyone else while trying to track down Ethan (Jonathan Byrne). A fluctuating anomaly reading draws the special attention of Philip (Alexander Siddig) and leads to the team investigating the evocatively named Witchfield Cove in Episode Five of PRIMEVAL, where the locals have a legend about a giant worm; where’s Kyle MacLachlan when you need him. There are also some shady goings-on around town, and while Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and Abby (Hannah Spearritt) check into everything, Matt (Ciaran McMenamin) is forced to chase after an abducted Emily (Ruth Bradley). Connor also has an offer he can’t refuse from Philip about joining a secret project at Philip’s lab, Prospero…but can he refuse it after all if it means leaving ARC field work behind?

Most of the ARC team is dispatched to handle a herd of venomous, hybrid reptile/mammals invading McKinnon school, a mission complicated by the presence of several annoying students kept after hours in an amateur reenactment of THE BREAKFAST CLUB. There’s a stuck-up girl (Lauren Coe) with an attitude that just begs to be taken down a peg via the tender attentions of a therocephalian, and two geeky boys (Patrick Gibson, Ciaran Flynn) that might have merited some sympathy if they didn’t try to humiliate the girl by uploading her personal phone videos to the school’s CCTV system. But it’s all academic (heh) since the school is now a battleground.

And, of course, ASSIGNMENT X couldn’t resist asking his thoughts on the new DOCTOR WHO series post his exit. “Of course I love it! Stephen Moffat’s most important role is to get me a DVD before that Saturday of transmission,” says Davies. “This new season it’s going to go out on BBC America on the same day, but I still want […]Read On »

It’s not that there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just that the U.K. series is still so fresh in our minds – and about to head into Season Three as we speak. Plus, it’s damn good. With the American remake of the recent BBC series BEING HUMAN set to debut on Syfy on January 17, the cast and executive producers appeared today at the Winter 2011 TCA’s to talk about the similarities and differences between the two incarnations of the show. The basic premise remains: vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer), werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington) and ghost Sally (Meaghan Rath) all share a loft together and try to get to the bottom of what it’s like to “being human.” “I would say if you’re a fan of the original, you’re going to see a show that starts much […]Read On »

TV Review: PRIMEVAL – Season 4 – “Episode One”

Ben Mansfield, Ruth Kearney, Hannah Spearritt, Andrew-Lee Potts and Ciarán McMenamin in PRIMEVAL - Season 4 |© 2010 Impossible Pictures

PRIMEVAL returns – almost beyond all reason – for a fourth series of adventures two years after its cancellation and miraculous resurrection via some joint funding (which will see it through at least a fifth series airing later in 2011). I’ve been following the show since its debut as an ITV DOCTOR WHO rival, and it’s one of those series that just seems to hang on despite not being all that good. It has a great premise, some decent characters (at least initially), a cute hook via the cheesy CGI dinosaurs and monsters that populate every episode, but it never manages to rise above mediocrity. And yet, here we are talking about its fourth series premiere.
