TV Review: SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA – “Missio”

With first episode of SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA viewers were transported back five years before the events of SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND. The beginnings of the House of Batiatus seemed shaky at best with the head of the house lacking some of that snake-like quickness to seize on any opportunity with ruthlessness and viciousness. Likewise his wife Lucretia seems to have milk-teeth compared to the shark-sized mouth of razors she ends up using in the original series.

TV Review: PRIMEVAL – Season 4 – “Episode Five”

A fluctuating anomaly reading draws the special attention of Philip (Alexander Siddig) and leads to the team investigating the evocatively named Witchfield Cove in Episode Five of PRIMEVAL, where the locals have a legend about a giant worm; where’s Kyle MacLachlan when you need him. There are also some shady goings-on around town, and while Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and Abby (Hannah Spearritt) check into everything, Matt (Ciaran McMenamin) is forced to chase after an abducted Emily (Ruth Bradley). Connor also has an offer he can’t refuse from Philip about joining a secret project at Philip’s lab, Prospero…but can he refuse it after all if it means leaving ARC field work behind?

With no offense to Ramin Djawadi’s rock-fueled percussion that accompanied the more-than-manly, 3-D CGI revamp of this year’s CLASH, it’s likely that Laurence Rosenthal’s symphonically lush, hero-making music of the gods was the stuff that played in Perseus’ ears as he slew Medusa and turned the Kraken to stone. It’s an old school style that will also forever identify CLASH for a certain geek generation, for whom no amount of cool computer effects will ever replace Ray Harryhausen’s home-made brand of stop-motion wonder, for whom Rosenthal’s score provided a more than worthy send-off. You can likely put the number of Napoleon-ea action scores on a short list, a unique quality that makes the genre open musical territory for Spanish-born (and American-trained) composer Xavier Capellas, who’s handled the scoring chores on such Spanish-funded horror pictures as BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR and FAUST. BRUC carries as similarly unhinged quality as a Catalonian goes Rambo on the Emperor’s assassins who pursue him through the mountainous wilds of Monteressat, giving Capellas the opportunity to unleash heroic hell in one of the more weirdly off-kilter period scores since Joe Lo Duca’s BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF. The idea of having someone else try to re-create the inimitable sound of Vangelis is enough to induce a Vietnam flashback to the infamous New American Orchestra’s “adaptation” of 1982’s BLADE RUNNER, done at the time of the film’s release to cash in on fans’ desperate desire for an official soundtrack that would be twenty-five years in coming. Movie Review: THE RITE

THE RITE is actually based on the book “The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist” which follows real-life Catholic exorcist priest Father Gary Thomas and illustrates various points in his journey. The movie is ‘inspired by true-events’ so there is no really conclusive way to figure out where the original story ends and the Hollywood version starts. Still, the movie is an entertaining ride of white-knuckled tension that leaves the audience waiting for something diabolical to surface in scenes where there is actually nothing to indicate a scare.
