Jessica Pare and Jon Hamm in MAD MEN - Season 5 - "Christmas Waltz" | ©2012 AMC/Jordin Althaus

Stars: John Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, Jared Harris, John Slattery, January Jones, Jessica Pare, Robert Morse, Aaron Staton, Rich Sommer, Kiernan Shipka Writer: Victor Levin & Matthew Wiener, Series created by Matthew Wiener Director: Michael Uppendahl       Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: May 20, 2012 “Christmas Waltz” is such an odd episode of MAD MEN to me. It feels like little bits and pieces of various characters’ stories without any kind of a central through line to tie them together as well as some episodes in the past. There are so many significant moments in this […]Read On »

Phillip Phillips wins AMERICAN IDOL Season 11 | (c) 2012 Michael Becker / FOX

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 8 p.m. Original Telecast: May 23, 2012 So we are mercifully at the finale of the 11th season of the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL. I missed last week because I had a serious case of IDOLitis, meaning I simply could not watch the show last week it was something in my blood. This is roughly the 40th review I have done this year and so yes it grates on you after many, many weeks. Anyway, just to get this out of the […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: James Van Der Beek chats about DON’T TRUST THE B—- IN APARTMENT 23

In ABC’s DON’T TRUST THE B—- IN APARTMENT 23, which was recently renewed for a second season, Krysten Ritter plays Chloe, the devious “B” in question. Chloe makes life very interesting for her new roommate June, portrayed by Dreama Walker. Within the story, Chloe’s BFF is former DAWSON’S CREEK star James Van Der Beek, who is played by … James Van Der Beek, in a case of a performer showing a remarkably good sense of the absurd about himself, his career and life in general. At a party thrown by ABC for the Television Critics Association, Van Der Beek takes […]Read On »

AMERICAN IDOL Season 11 Recap: Phillip Phillips slays Jessica Sanchez to become the frontrunner for the Season 11 victory

Phillip Phillips in the AMERICAN IDOL - Season 11 finale | ©2012 Fox/Michael Becker

AMERICAN IDOL has become more predictable as it ages. And if anyone thinks Jessica Sanchez is going to win over Phillip Phillips is seriously mistaken. The Tween girls rule IDOL, which is why cute guys tend to win the show over cute girls. This year however, if you compare the two finalists and the songs they sang, it was obvious, one was the clear winner. And your winner, though not yet crowned, is Phillip Phillips. Yes, there could be some producer trickery and Sanchez could pull an upset, but it would be insincere to say the least. The rundown of […]Read On »

Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd are DANCING WITH THE STARS: Season 14 champs! Wow! OMG! You’re kidding, right? Never before have I been so surprised about the winner of DWTS than I was tonight. Not that Driver & Murgatroyd didn’t deserve it. He rocked the house last night and tonight, but he didn’t always impress. Still, it was a well-deserved win. I just had my money on William Levy & Cheryl Burke to take it all. I would […]Read On »

CD Review: BEN-HUR soundtrack

BEN-HUR soundtrack | ©2012 Film Score Monthly

If the granite-jawed manliness of Charlton Heston made him the anointed prince of Hollywood widescreen pictures with THE BIG COUNTRY, 55 DAYS AT PEKING and THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY, then it was Miklos Rozsa’s ability to fill the screen with equally rapturous melody that turned him into epic court composer of KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE, KING OF KINGS and SODOM AND GOMORRAH. And while Heston and Rozsa would get in the Spanish saddle together for the mighty EL CID nothing would match the other teaming of these two larger-than-life talents like 1959’s BEN-HUR, the eleven Oscar-winning picture (including […]Read On »

We caught up with two of GLEE’s creators/executive producers, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan (the third creator/executive producer is Brad Falchuk) for a short chat about the journey so far. ASSIGNMENT X: At what point in GLEE’s life did you realize you had not just a TV series, but a pop culture phenomenon? RYAN MURPHY: I was out of the country shooting [EAT PRAY LOVE starring Julia Roberts] when it sort of all happened. I think it was the episode [“The Rhodes Not Taken”] that was the first Kristin Chenoweth […]Read On »

CD Review: THE WAR OF THE BUTTONS soundtrack

THE WAR OF THE BUTTONS soundtrack | ©2012 Music Box Records

Cute kids go to fake war again in the fourth adaptation of Louis Pergaud’s 1912 novel THE WAR OF THE BUTTONS (LA NOUVELLE GUERRE DES BOUTONS), which was first made in France in 1962 before having its non-violent action moved to the Irish countryside for a 1994 version. Then in 2011, the story traveled back to its country of origin twice, which might be some kind of record for retelling the same story. For director Christophe (LES CHOIRISTES) Barratier’s version, Gallic composer Philippe Rombi takes up the musical charge from Jose Berghmans, Rachel Portman and Klaus Badelt with a score […]Read On »
