There were many doubts with AMERICAN IDOL going into Season 10 that it wouldn’t thrive and survive without iconic judge Simon Cowell at the helm. Yet, with new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez joining Randy Jackson, the show has been an even bigger player than last year. It’s a tough TV business, and every year fan favorite shows get the boot in favor of new shows that sometimes don’t live up to the potential of the departing series. This year, Fox canceled many fan favorites including the three season LIE TO ME, the two season HUMAN TARGET and THE CHICAGO CODE and the comedies TRAFFIC LIGHT and BREAKING IN. Even though the Fox network has no involvement with the proposed 24 movie featuring Kiefer Sutherland reprising his role as Jack Bauer, it didn’t stop Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Rice from being asked about it while speaking the press today about Fox’s 2011-2012 schedule. “I don’t work at the movie company,” Rice cautious, “but my sense about it, is everyone would like to make a 24 movie. The Fox network kicked things off today in New York as they announced their aggressive Fall and Midseason plans, placing the anticipated Steven Spielberg produced TERRA NOVA series on Monday nights in the fall while Midseason Monday nights will debut the new J.J. NBC was the first out of the gate to announce their Fall 2011 and Midseason 2012 schedule in New York today. With the most to gain, NBC has put together a pretty aggressive schedule of newcomers benefitted from expected returning warhorses. While there isn’t anything earth-shattering, it is nice to see NBC going with the CW playbook by booking two genre series back-to-back on Friday night with returning CHUCK and the new series GRIMM.
