TCA 2011: Fox addresses recent GLEE controversy, spin-off status and Season 3

With GLEE entering Season 3, controversy has dogged the Fox show in the last few weeks. Some of it stems with co-creator Ryan Murphy talking about writing three of the show’s primary leads off the show (Chris Colfer, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith) at the end of this season by having them graduating, but failing to mention he was quietly developing a spin-off for them. TCA 2011: Fox talks about the greenlight of COSMOS: A SPACE-TIME ODYSSEY

The last thing anyone would expect the Fox network to do would be a documentary sequel to the hit 1980s PBS/Carl Sagan hosted and produced documentary science series COSMOS, but it’s official – they’ve greenlit it. Titled COSMOS: A SPACE-TIME ODYSSEY, the series will surprisingly be produced by FAMILY GUY creator Seth MacFarlane. When Fox announced that AMERICA’S MOST WANTED, a Saturday night staple since the network began, wouldn’t be returning for a full new season, questions arose as to why. When is a show cancelled, but not cancelled? That’s been the mystery behind the Christian Slater comedy BREAKING IN that did pretty good during midseason this year on Fox after AMERICAN IDOL. It wasn’t enough for it to get an official Season 2 renewal, but in recent months, there’s been movement that could bring the series back. One of the big wins for the Fox network last season was the risky move of its signature science-fiction series FRINGE from Thursday nights to Fridays – resulting in sustained ratings and giving Fox a stronghold on what has been a traditionally difficult night for them. With HOUSE returning for Season 8 with a leaner cast this fall, and a long negotiation process that delayed the announcement it would be returning, the question mark of whether the show will return for a Season 9 was in the air at today’s Summer 2011 Television Critics Association session for Fox. Three out of the four acts picked tonight on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT Quarter-Finals – Hollywood Week 4 were no big surprise. Team Illuminate, Fatally Unique and Zuma Zuma were as sure a thing as anything can be. What was surprising was that Yellow Designs Stunt Team didn’t make it and comedian Melissa Villasenor did make it. Ousted were the death defying artist Frank Miles, singer Taylor Davis and the Chipettes sounding Avery and the Calico Hearts.
