The reason many people love bad horror movies is that they can be hilariously funny despite not being frightening. The reason bad comedies are painful is because they are not funny or frightening. THE WEEDHACKER MASSACRE is a comedy about a bad horror movie remake, based on an actual (within the film’s reality) mass murder.
A prologue sets up the Gunter clan’s habit of killing relatives over money and marijuana.
In 2014, Willie Wonder (David Treviño) and a car full of young women who all adore him show up to a music festival in Gunter-run Red Eye, Texas. The festival has been canceled, and the Gunters want the interlopers gone.
The upshot is that the young women are all murdered, except reporter Candy Kersey (Molly Sakonchick), who hides herself. Willie is shot in the head multiple times, but his hair is so thick that it saves him. He is rescued by homicidal mask-wearing, weedhacker-wielding Pokerface (Sean Reyna).
Ten years later, director Rene Carpenter (Bobbie Grace) and producer DJ (Ron Oliveira) are in Red Eye to do a remake of THE WEEDHACKER MASSACRE, a horror movie based on the events of 2014. The movies all blame Willie for the killings.
The real Willie has spent the past ten years in the woods with Pokerface, his memory a blank. Candy has spent the decade in a mental institution, though she’s out with her shady psychiatrist (Thep Tan) to be an advisor on the film.
The central joke of THE WEEDHACKER MASSACRE (the one we’re watching, not the one the characters are making) is that the acting and dialogue in the film within the film are awful. A little of this can go a long way, and there’s a lot of it. The “real” sections also have characters who aren’t terribly bright, so there’s not as much contrast as there could be.
There is a lot of blood, but no attempt whatever to be scary. Occasionally, there’s an on-target showbiz quip. However, the commentary on low-budget horror in terms of both content and production is so hazy and unlikely as to be more baffling than laugh-inducing.
Also, while nobody is expecting documentary-style detail here, even crappy horror franchises don’t have multiple remakes within ten years – sequels, yes, remakes, no.
The country folk ballad written and performed by Britton Buchanan is pretty tuneful and amusing.
The credits for THE WEEDHACKER MASSACRE are unconventional. Although Jody Stelzig is listed as the director and Ray Spivey is named as the writer, Allen Danziger and Spivey are the creators and get a joint “film by” title card.
THE WEEDHACKER MASSACRE has been accepted into many film festivals and won multiple awards, including Best Comedy at the New York International Film Festival Indie Fest.
So, what the heck does this reviewer know? Clearly, people’s mileage will vary as to whether this is successful bad horror parody or unsuccessful comedy.
