In 2021’s NOBODY, Bob Odenkirk starred as Hutch Mansell who, beneath his meek, loving family man exterior, has an endless reservoir of well-trained violent rage.
Hutch, his family and his reservoir are all back in NOBODY 2, as is the NOBODY plot structure. In the first film, we learn that Hutch was a government assassin for multiple agencies who really wanted to settle down with his loving wife Rebecca (Connie Nielsen) and be a good dad to their two kids, son Brady (Gage Munroe) and daughter Sammy (Paisley Cadorath) in upscale suburbia.
The problem was, over a decade into the domestic set-up, Hutch found himself plagued by nameless discontent. A minor robbery at the Mansell house sent Hutch after the thieves, but mercy for them (and their baby) stayed his hand.
But then, Hutch saw five guys trying to assault a young woman on a bus and his old abilities came pouring out in a crimson tide. Complications set in when it turned out that the men Hutch sent to the hospital and the morgue were all members of a branch of the Russian mafia.
Hutch eventually prevailed, with the aid of his likewise skilled but more serene brother Harry (RZA) and their up-for-anything dad David (Christopher Lloyd).
In NOBODY 2, Hutch is back in his old line of employment under unflappable handler the Barber (Colin Salmon). Now the domestic problem isn’t that Hutch is forlorn, but rather that he’s continually late for dinner due to his job.
Realizing he needs to spend more time with Rebecca and the children, Hutch declares to the Barber that he’s taking a break. Hutch then tells the clan that they’re going on vacation to a small town centered around an amusement park that Hutch and Harry loved when they were young (maybe because it’s the only vacation they ever got).
With Grandpa Dave in tow, the Mansells arrive at their kitschy destination. Despite the super-discount Disney trappings, Rebecca, Brady and Sammy all start to have a good time. But then Brady gets into a scuffle at the arcade. Hutch is willing to let it go – and then the arcade manager cuffs Sammy on the back of the head. Hutch unleashes on the manager and all who try to help him.
Soon enough, Hutch inadvertently rouses the ire of a whole new mob, this one headed up by the conscienceless Lundina (Sharon Stone).
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto and scripted by original NOBODY writer Derek Kohlstad and Aaron Rabin from Kohlstad’s story, NOBODY 2 has much the same rhythms as its predecessor. X amount of time is given to putting Hutch in mundane situations, the better to contrast with the greater Y amount of time where he’s fighting multiple opponents to the bloody death, with some dark humor and backdrops like the amusement park for added discombobulation.
There are a few nods to character issues, such as hints that Rebecca has a similarly deadly past and parental concerns that Brady may be taking after his dad in the hitting folks department. However, these get so little screen time that we wonder if they’re mainly present to set up a NOBODY 3.
Odenkirk is excellent, Nielsen is fine if underused, and Stone does well with her cartoon psycho role.
NOBODY 2 is for those who enjoy good old-fashioned butt-kicking (and shooting and stabbing and exploding) with just enough justification to get things rolling. It exists mainly to showcase some high-level stunt work, with sufficient connective tissue to hang together. It doesn’t aim high or promise much, but it delivers on what it intends to be.
