CW has another hit show on its network with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and ASSIGNMENT X got a chance to sit down and talk to Kristin Kreuk, who stars as Catherine Chandler and Jay Ryan who stars as Vincent Keller recently.

For those of you that loved BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (l987 – 1990), starring Ron Perlman as Vincent and Linda Hamilton as Asst. Dist. Atty. Catherine Chandler this updated version will not disappoint you.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST won The People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama this year over other nominees ARROW, ELEMENTARY, NASHVILLE and REVOLUTION.

ASSIGNMENT X: Kristin, it’s been awhile since we’ve seen you on TV, what is it about this show that brought you back to TV?

KRISTIN KREUK: The show is really interesting. The female character is really strong and complicated and I wanted to do that. When I met with the girls that created the show, Executive Producers Sherri (Cooper) and Jennifer (Levin) I just fell in love with them and I thought we would have a very good opportunity to create a female character that was really interesting.

AX: Were you a fan of the original show?

KREUK: Jay was.

JAY RYAN: I was a huge fan. When I was little and it played in New Zealand it was a very popular show. I actually watched it with my Nana as she watched after me after school. So when I got the call to audition I was excited to see how it progressed from the original series.

AX: The show is totally different, but you still go through the makeup as Ron Perlman did, but not as much it seems.

RYAN: There is a four-hour makeup process that happens when the beast sort of comes out of him, because in our back-story he is part of a military experiment. He was created as a super soldier that has gone completely wrong. It’s sort of like HULK in a way, I guess.

AX: The storyline is a bit different really.

RYAN:  Absolutely.

KREUK: It is very similar in many ways. At the root the concept of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are all there. In content it looks very different.

RYAN: And it’s set in the modern world as well, post 9-11, so it’s a lot more as the world is more hungry and powerful. We also really through back our heads and give a nod at the romantic genre of the original series. That was a very strong unique thing that the original series did. So we want to play with that a lot.

AX: What have you been doing since leaving SMALLVILLE?

KREUK: I’ve done a bunch of independent films things. A mini-series. I focused on that type of work before deciding to come back and do a show.

AX: We were wondering maybe she went back to college or just decided to take time off.

KREUK: When I finished SMALLVILLE, I’m like I’m never doing a TV show again! [Laughs] I think, for me it was depended on certain circumstances being in place to make it something I really wanted. And I think growing up a little bit.

AX: Did they ask you to come back for the final episode of SMALLVILLE?

KREUK:  [laughs] We had decided on completing a story arch and I think Lana’s [Lang’s] story arc finished beautifully. I loved it. I think it was really complete and well done and it didn’t make sense to have her come back.

[Kelly Souders, Executive Producer of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and former executive producer of SMALLVILLE sits down with us and chats about BEAUTY]

KELLY SOUDERS: I was just talking to them that we had a decided this week that the show is really about a cop and a killer who end up falling in love. So as you can imagine it’s very complicated. There is a lot of twists and turns in their relationship as both of them kind of evolve and get closer together and have to give up the way they have been living for the last decade.

AX:  Jay, how long to the world knows about you?

RYAN: We are going to try to prolong that as long as possible, because first Catherine needs to know more about him and we need to build that relationship. I would say in the world that we live in in this series it will begin to leak more and more and evidence of this beast will start to get out there and with all the social media we have in this world eventually he is going to be on the 6 o’clock news! [Laughs] Killer loose!

AX: Your partner Tess (Nina Lisandrello) how long till she discovers him?

KREUK: I think she would probably be one of the first people to know, but I don’t know. I think it’s a big deal if somebody finds out about him. We have to be sure that they understand the gravity of it coming out that this person exists and is alive, because there are agencies that are really out there to stop that from happening.

RYAN: I’m being hunted!

AX: She keeps wondering where you disappear to all the time and don’t tell her.

KREUK: She’ll start to notice that Catherine is lying when she is not there all the time and she is not doinghttps://www.assignmentx.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=50906&action=edit her job the way she used to.

RYAN: And Evan [Max Brown] as well, the forensic scientist that works with the cops starts to find little bits of evidence and really pushing Catherine, as she has to lie a lot.

AX: I look forward to seeing how the show develops.

KREUK and RYAN: Thank you very much.
