Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Hope Solo on DANCING WITH THE STARS - Season 13 - Week 9 | ©2011 ABC/Adam Taylor

Stars: Rob Kardashian, Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez, Hope Solo
Network: ABC, airs Mondays, Tuesdays
Original Telecast: Nov. 15th, 2011

No one was surprised tonight when high scores deprived struggling couple Hope Solo & Maksim Chmerkovskiy were booted off DANCING WITH THE STARS during Week 9 of Season 13. The judges had let them know with their low scores that they wanted them to go next and well, Solo and Chmerkovskiy “very” vocally acknowledged that this week. Chmerkovskiy’s angry words to and about the judges a couple of weeks ago pretty much sealed their fate. Plus, let’s face it, Solo was the weakest of the four remaining celebrity dancers. It was only fair – which isn’t always the case on DWTS, but this time it was.

Newly minted finalist Rob Kardashian & Cheryl Burke opened the show with the encore performance. Cobra Starship rocked the house with a little dance assist from Tristan Macmanus, Kym Johnson and others. Early on, Solo was put in the jeopardy category, clearly foretelling what was to come. In a funny aside Carson Kressley did a little video snippet of him visiting, where else, the wardrobe department and helping the four remaining couples pick out their costumes. I am telling you, he’ll be back for sure on future seasons. I have no doubt!

The Macy’s Stars of Dance performance was the seasonal “Design a Dance.” This time around Derek Hough and Anna Trebunskaya were hand picked by fans to do their thing. And wow! They didn’t disappoint.

The AT&T Spotlight performance featured four young male dancers discussing what it what like growing up and being teased for being a male dancer. Then, the quartet got to boogie with four DWTS pro dancers. Nicely done, boys!

In an ABC (i.e. Disney) self promotional moment The Muppets gave a song and dance – literally – to spotlight a new number from their film THE MUPPETS coming out next week.

Next safe was the couple presently in first place – Ricki Lake & Derek Hough. Still awaiting their fate were J. R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff, who were left standing with the other “in jeopardy” couple Solo & Chmerkovskiy. And so it goes, Solo leaves in fourth place. Yes, Chmerkovskiy and Solo had a rough time with the judges. And yes, he may have said things he shouldn’t have, but let’s face it, so have the judges. Their slates are not clean.

Carrie Ann Inaba chastised Chmerkovskiy for smirking last night while she critiqued them. Inaba was clearly being a little dramatic. I never saw any such “smile” as she called it. Calm down everybody! It’s a show! Relax! Yes, it’s hard to take a criticism when you’ve worked your butt off all week. And yes Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Inaba sometimes are less than tactful in their declarations, but it’s not worth heated words being exchanged. Enjoy the show. It’s a DANCE show for crying out loud! Now, that that’s been said, onto the finals for Kardashian & Burke, Lake & Hough and Martinez & Smirnoff! Stay tuned!

  1. I am so dissappointed with DWTS thiss season. The ratings are down and I can tell you why. First of all not everyone thinks Chaz Bono is something to be joyous about. I’m sorry that she has been so unhappy with her life, but not everyone agrees that its okay to change the gender you were born with. The judges especially Carrie Ann, who is so phony and two faced did everything she could to keep Chaz on the show. Hello the show was about DANCING not about her life and what she did with it. The judges are ruining this show because they are biased to a point that it is disgusting. They rated Chaz and Kardashia too high from the beginning, and they both should have been given the boot the second week. The show is about talent and dancing, not co dependant problmes. Max was right in speaking up, the judges were totally inconsistent with their ratings and showed biased favortism towards Chaz and Rob Kardashian. They are rude when it is not necessary to the contestants and pros. ABC needs to get rid of Carrie Ann and Len. Maxim is a lot more popular then they are and the people are not tuning in to watch Carrie Ann and Len, thats for sure.

    • I mostly agree with you. The judges (esp. Len and Carrie Ann) were so biased that it was obvious and disgusting. I was happy to see Chaz Bono though doing his best. Life is complicated and difficult… Yes, Len and Carrie are ruining the show.

  2. I thought that Kate Gosslin was a terrible contestant – but she had nothing on Hope Solo. Hope was dismissive, disrespectful and was obviously unable to accept criticism that was in the most part – well earned. I wonder if she is that difficult to coach on the soccer field. She needs to re-evaluate her worth in life.
I am sorry that Max had to deal with her this season and hope to see him back next season.

  5. I thought that the judges were extremely unfair. Unreasonably unfair, and I cannot understand why. I found Ricky Lake to be stiff and painful to watch but they loved her while criticizing the far more graceful Hope Solo. It got personal, too when they lectured Hope about “working harder”, a laughable comment to a hard-working Olympic star who obviously worked very hard to learn and perform the dances. I thought that the judges were sickening, Len and Carrie Ann most of all.

  6. I am a 13 season fan. However, the last 2 season have been “controlled” by judges choices. I do not think the judges giving additional points at this point is fair at the semifinals. This was also observed also in Season 12. Obviously, the judges like or support Rob even though he is not the best dancer. Carrie Ann is obviously a LA groupie. What a disappointment to a former favorite show.

  7. I can’t send a negative review. What a shame in a former favorite show. Will I watch next season?

  8. I have been watching DWTS for the last 6 years or so and I live in Southern Ireland…so we get it transmitted here weeks after the show is over.. but I am so utterly disappointed that Andrea Bocelli appeared on last show before the semi finals… No disrespect to DWTS.. but a singer/artist of Andrea’s callibre should not be appearing on a live dance show… This man is an opera/classical singer and even the genre of the style of music that he sung.. what can I say… was not his usual form… I’m so distraught… love DWTS and nothing can change that but Andrea Bocelli is a legend and doesn’t need to perform on this type of show…

  39. I find the judges of DWTS a DISGRACE this season: Hope and Maks were MUCH better then Rob Kardashian and a few others this week.
From day ONE the judges have been picking on Hope and MAks, big time, no matter what she did it was not good enough, and if for example Chaz Bono hopped around the dancefloor like a stiff deer, he was “wonderful” and got an eight. It is totally disgusting, and Maks finally had enough of it, and said something, and he said it RIGHT, and so did Hope.
It was terrible and a disgrace, and bad judging the way they picked on Hope and MAks, especially Mr. So called perfectionist Len and Mrs. Carry Ann, who had to cry, every time Chaz Bono was able to move a toe in the right direction on the dancefloor: it is NOT about what he went through in life, it is about dancing!!! I think MAks was putting it mildly, but I also knew that this would get them thrown out of the show: first week after the “incident” they get good comments and good scores, which they deserved, second week, they simply put a torpedo on them and gave them disgustingly UNDESERVED low scores, to get them of the show…..
IF THIS is how DWTS needs to function, better throw it off the television……..and I love the show…
