Created by George Pelicanos and David Simon, HBO’s new Sunday night series THE DEUCE explores the dawn of the modern porn industry in New York in the ‘70s. James Franco, who is also one of the executive producers, plays twin brothers, based on two real people, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Candy, a prostitute who has aspirations to become a porn director. Melissa Leo won a Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in THE FIGHTER as Alice Ward, the real-life mother of prize fighter Mickey Ward, played in the film by Mark Wahlberg. Alice is a tough customer, which describes many of the characters played by the New York-born Leo, including her Baltimore police detective in five seasons of HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS and her New Orleans flood survivor Toni Bernette in HBO’s TREME. “Tough” is perhaps the mildest way to refer to Leo’s Nurse Pam on Fox’s WAYWARD PINES, Thursdays at 9 PM. Discovery Channel’s first scripted project, KLONDIKE, is a six-hour miniseries, running in three two-hour blocks, dealing with the Yukon gold rush in 1897-1897. Based on Charlotte Gray’s novel THE GOLD DIGGERS and scripted by executive producer Paul Scheuring, KLONDIKE stars Richard Madden as novice prospector Bill Haskell, Abbie Cornish as a businesswoman in the mining town Dawson City, Tim Roth as a malevolent mover and shaker and Sam Shepard as a determined man of the cloth.
