Movie Review: THE WATCHERS

THE WATCHERS movie poster | ©2024 New Line/Warner Bros.

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, Oliver Finnegan, Alistair Brammer, John Lynch Writer: Ishana Night Shyamalan, based on the novel by A.M. Shine Director: Ishana Night Shyamalan Distributor: New Line/Warner Bros. Release Date: June 7, 2024 THE WATCHERS has its issues, like a desktop computer, supposedly from 2009, that looks like it’s from the early ‘90s, and an apartment that’s strangely empty when this isn’t a plot point. However, the biggest matter facing THE WATCHERS has nothing to do with the filmmaking prowess of writer/director Ishana Night Shyamalan in her feature debut, adapting A.M. Shine’s novel for […]Read On »

Movie Review: BROOKLYN 45

BROOKLYN 45 key art | ©2023 Shudder

Rating: Not Rated Stars: Anne Ramsay, Ron E. Rains, Jeremy Holm, Larry Fessenden, Ezra Buzzington, Kristina Klebe Writer: Ted Geoghegan Director: Ted Geoghegan Distributor: Shudder/AMC+ Release Date: June 9, 2023 Much of BROOKLYN 45 rolls out as though it could be a stage play. Most of it occurs on a single albeit large set. It also has what is more a theatrical than a film convention, a group of middle-aged friends coming together for what’s meant to be a friendly social gathering that becomes an exploration of ethics, duty, responsibility, guilt, and a lot more. But then there’s the supernatural […]Read On »

We begin with a man we’ll come to know as Pauly Blumenthal (Adam Leese), doing what appears to be a vlog on his laptop. Pauly is complaining that all […]Read On »

Film Festival: TIFF 2022: The 47th Annual Toronto International Film Festival – Part 1 (The Films)

TAR l ©2022 Focus Features

Dateline Toronto Film Festival: 10 Days. Over 200 films. You’re going to have to pick and chose carefully. After two years of Covid-19 restrictions and online “virtual film festivals” TIFF returned in 2022 to full on in person spectacle. The stars were back, the seats were full and the sponsors were happy. Here’s what I found; Taylor Swift lauded for shooting her video on film, two films (MY POLICEMAN, DON’T WORRY DARLING) staring singer turned actor Harry Styles and a whole lot more. (You know it’s an odd year when WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY has jam packed press screenings). But […]Read On »

Movie Review: NIGHT AT THE EAGLE INN

NIGHT AT THE EAGLE INN movie poster | ©2021 1091 Pictures

Rating: Not Rated Stars: Amelia Dudley, Taylor Turner, Beau Minniear, Greg Schweers Writers: Carson Bloomquist & Erik Bloomquist (also produced and edited together) Director: Erik Bloomquist Distributor: 1091 Pictures Release Date: November 2, 2021 NIGHT AT THE EAGLE INN plays like a longer-than-normal but not-bad TWILIGHT ZONE episode. The filmmakers are well aware of this. Their characters name-check that series, along with Norman Bates, Jack Torrance, and even Annie Wilkes. This seems partly to speed things along, and partly as a cheeky assurance that, yes, everybody knows they’re doing a riff on a well-established form. Fraternal adult twins Sarah (Amelia […]Read On »
