THE WRONG GIRLS has the wrong title, inasmuch as it implies this is a comedy about mistaken identity. To be fair, it is indeed a comedy, and there is an instance of mistaken identity with one woman, Frankie (Kristen Stewart). Frankie is in some ways deeply immature but not young enough to be a girl. In any event, this is just the jumping-off point for this new breed of weed comedy.

There have been plenty of stoner comedies in the past, including a number that have pot (combined, or not, with other drugs) giving its users superpowers. However, THE WRONG GIRLS is the first to give us heroines in the form of Frankie and her BFF/roomie Molly (Alia Shawkat).

While both geniuses in their own unique ways – Frankie can open a combination lock and Molly is a brilliant chef – the two live in a spectacularly messy house, where they are two weeks late on their rent. Both have given up on their career dreams to enjoy spliffs with inadequate income. Frankie is a delivery person for a UPS-like outfit; Molly does spreadsheets.

Molly’s perfectly sweet boyfriend Josh (Zack Fox) would like her to move in with him, touching off a tsunami of jealousy from Frankie. Making things worse, Frankie’s ex, Mike Z (Morgan Krantz), has taken up with a more stable girlfriend, Frances (also Stewart), who is physically a double for Frankie.

Thus it is that Frankie is assumed to be Frances and whisked out of a nightclub by Dave (LaKeith Stanfield). Dave gives Frankie a briefcase with detailed instructions on who to give it to and how to get it to them. Frankie, high as a kite, doesn’t understand a word of what Dave tells her, but takes the briefcase anyway.

Then Frankie and Molly sample the briefcase’s chemical contents and develop telepathy. Among many other things, this allows them to hear the thoughts of their cats (voiced by Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani). Frankie and Molly’s new altered state causes them to come up with several (illegal) ideas about how to make quick cash.

At the same time, Molly and Frankie attract the attention of a posse of armed Dutchmen (Thomas La Barbera Christensen, Thor Knai, Thomas Nicholson), who want the briefcase back at all costs.

Writer/director Dylan Meyer scores some genuine out-loud laughs, some of it due to creative staging and surprising dialogue, and some of it due to her skillful leads. Shawkat is absolutely committed to Molly’s sincerity in all things, whether it’s bewilderment, guilt, or joy. Frankie is written as someone whose self-confidence and self-doubt are both usually misplaced, and Stewart deftly handles the character’s internal contradictions.

There are a number of good running jokes (including some local references that will tickle Southern Californians) and a few hilarious sight gags. Still, THE WRONG GIRLS has stretches of seeming to think it’s funnier than it is, which is often true of people under the influence. Fortunately, the movie bounces back and returns to being actually amusing often enough to work more often than not.

THE WRONG GIRLS is uneven but, for those open to its brand of humor, it’s worth toking, uh, taking the trip.
