As NBC begins to transition from its aging comedy series to finding the next big breakout hits, change is inevitable. And even though THE OFFICE, PARKS AND RECREATION, COMMUNITY (now on Fridays) and 30 ROCK are critics darlings, ratings have been on the decline and NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt says they are looking to find broader based shows to fill those holes if and when those series go off the air. “The Thursday night shows are great shows,” says Greenblatt speaking at this week’s NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour. “They’re award-winning and incredibly sophisticated and clever, and we couldn’t […]Read On »

Despite an uneven first season, NBC renewed SMASH for a second season and brought in new showrunner Josh Safron to get the show focused. At the NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour, Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt discussed the changes on the horizon and why they were made. “I’m inordinately proud of SMASH on so many levels,” explains Greenblatt. “The complexity of producing that show every week is just incredible. And as a television producer and as a Broadway producer, which I once was, I am in awe of what we can do on that show every week. It’s a big soap […]Read On »

While AMERICA’S GOT TALENT has proven to be a perennial summer favorite on NBC in the summer, the ratings have not been as strong as they have been in summer’s past and at today’s NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour, this decline was discussed. “The show is still number one and likely to end the summer as the number one show this summer,” says Paul Telegdy, NBC Entertainment President of Alternative and Late Night Programming. “I think that we debate frequently the ratings of all our shows and as we discuss AGT this summer, we look at what we’ve asked of […]Read On »

With COMMUNITY  getting new showrunners, only a 13-episode commitment and a new timeslot on Fridays, the question remains – how committed is NBC to the ground-breaking and highly original series? At today’s NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt discussed the COMMUNITY situation and what’s happening with NBC’s comedy slate in general “I think we’re going to transition with our comedy programming trying to broaden the audience and broaden what the network does,” says Greenblatt. “Those Thursday comedies [30 ROCK, PARKS AND RECREATION, THE OFFICE), which the critics love and we love, tend to be a bit […]Read On »

With NBC’s music competition series THE VOICE adding a Fall cycle in addition to a Spring cycle, the question arises can the show sustain its ratings and not over-saturate itself. At today’s NBCUniversal Summer 2012 Press Tour, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt addressed these concerns saying every network partakes in this practice to some extent – particularly with their most popular series. “Almost every reality franchise does two cycles a season,” observes Greenblatt. “And one could argue that AMERICAN IDOL and THE X FACTOR are the same show in many respects with one in the Fall and one in the […]Read On »

With GLEE entering its fourth season with storylines set in Ohio and New York, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly reveals this new structure has worked out quite nicely with the three scripts he’s read so far. “I’m very happy with how seamless it is,” says Reilly. “There is a thematic linkage between the two. I think it’s going to be an event for fun for the audience not knowing who is going to show up when. We have a core of returning character we will be servicing every week and limited deals with some actors joining here or there.” Reilly […]Read On »

While Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly admits that the network has history of cancelling low-rated genre shows despite huge fan bases, he admitted today at the Fox Summer TCA Press Tour that he was pleased he was able to give FRINGE a final 13-episode Season 5 send-off. “I don’t like to pull the plug on any show, and many of our failed shows have millions of fans,” says Reilly. “We have a checkered history with genre at best, because we’re one of the only networks who have consistently tried genre. FRINGE has a particular fan base and the FRINGE producers […]Read On »
