First released theatrically in 2016, WE GO ON is newly available in remastered form on home video and digital. Apart from what feels like a quaint reference to “the sniffles” as opposed to COVID, there’s nothing that seems especially dated about the film, and Los Angeles residents will appreciate its geographic veracity.

Directed by Andy Mitton & Jesse Holland and written by Mitton from their joint story, WE GO ON introduces us to Miles Grissom (Clark Freeman) in the midst of his panicky nightmare about a car accident.

Miles is a thirty-something video editor for low-rent infomercials. He is phobic about practically everything: driving, heights, the outdoors, you name it. This is all underpinned by fear of death.

As he has inherited money from the passing of his aunt, Miles offers $30,000 to anyone who can conclusively prove there the soul exists post-mortem. To this end, he takes out a quarter-page ad in the LOS ANGELES TIMES online and print versions (bless him).

This quickly goes viral. It also prompts a visit from Miles’s understandably worried mom, Charlotte (Annette O’Toole). Charlotte isn’t a believer, and actively hopes that there is nothing after death. However, after she can’t dissuade Miles, she offers to help him weed out the fakes and crazies to see if any of the people responding to his ad may conceivably be on the level.

Some viewers like to not know which way a film is going to jump, while others feel they’ve been burned by enough fake-outs to want some assurances before they commit to watching. In support of the latter, we will acknowledge that WE GO ON is full-on supernatural horror, although the dangers often come from unexpected places. The tone is mostly naturalistic, with jump scares and suspense.

The film is often philosophical, expressing concepts in intriguing ways. Charlotte’s perspective is particularly touching, and gives the terrific O’Toole the opportunity to open up to us as if to a good friend.

As written in the script and as played by Freeman, Miles conveys a quiet sense of inquiry and decency that keeps us engaged, even when the character is at his most annoyingly timid. Other notable performances are given by John Glover, Giovanna Zacarías, Jay Dunn, and Laura Heisler.

Despite an obviously low budget, WE GO ON never looks or feels like it’s holding back. It provides some novel flourishes, and adds a layer of possibilities for us to dread when it comes to revenants.
