Jane Espenson is known for her work in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Most people with an interest in the works of Joss Whedon know that Espenson has been a writer/producer on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, FIREFLY and DOLLHOUSE. She also worked on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and CAPRICA, co-created WAREHOUSE 13, and this year wrote episodes of GAME OF THRONES and TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY.
However, in HUSBANDS, Espenson’s first foray as an independent producer and Internet entrepreneur, there’s only one futuristic element. In the show, which consists of 11 two-minute episodes and premieres at www. husbandstheseries.com on September 13, the Marriage Equality Act has passed on the federal level. Therefore, two men now have the same ability as heterosexual couples to get married in Vegas while utterly drunk – which is what happens to the main characters, played by Cheeks (the performing name of Brad Bell, Espenson’s writing/producing partner on the Web series) and Sean Hemeon.
Directed by DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES writer/producer/director Jeff Greenstein and co-starring CAPRICA’s Alessandra Torresani, HUSBANDS takes place primarily in Los Angeles, where it was filmed. Hemeon’s character was originally intended to be a football player, but Espenson said she and Bell changed the sport to baseball when they realized that L.A. doesn’t have its own football team.
Is this a statement by the HUSBANDS team that nation-wide gay marriage is more likely thanL.A. getting its own gridiron gang again? Espenson laughs. “We’re sure L.A. will have a football team soon!”
