Steven S. DeKnight served as the executive producer/show runner on the first season of Netflix’s DAREDEVIL, now streaming. He also created Starz’s four-season drama SPARTACUS, after working as a writer/producer on series including DOLLHOUSE, SMALLVILLE, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL. DAREDEVIL was originally developed from the Marvel comics by Drew Goddard, but DeKnight came aboard when Goddard went to work on THE MARTIAN. For Season 2, DeKnight remains as an executive producer on DAREDEVIL, but he’s handed over the reins to Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie in order to work on a film project. Executive producer Robert Tapert, star of the series and executive producer Bruce Campbell along with executive producer Sam Raimi, original filmmakers of the EVIL DEAD franchise, start production on the TV series ASH VS. EVIL DEAD which will premiere this fall on Starz | © 2015 Starz

When best friends director/writer Sam Raimi, producer Robert G. Tapert and actor Bruce Campbell made the short film WITHIN THE WOODS in their native Michigan, they were hoping to make the feature that became 1981’s THE EVIL DEAD. They didn’t realize they were launching a horror franchise that would spawn 1987’s EVIL DEAD II and 1992’s ARMY OF DARKNESS, plus a 2013 remake. They were expecting even less that, in 2015, they’d all be working on the television series ASH VS. EVIL DEAD, which will premiere on Starz later this year. The three men, who have all enjoyed enormous success […]Read On »

Liam McIntyre in SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE | ©2012 Starz

Starz Network’s SPARTACUS series, Friday nights at 10 PM, has gone through almost as many tribulations as its legendary hero. The first season, SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND, starred Andy Whitfield as the Thracian warrior sent into slavery and trained as a gladiator, only to turn on his master and free his fellows. Then Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the production company did a prequel season, SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA, while waiting for Whitfield to recover. Sadly, Whitfield’s cancer returned. He gave his blessing to the producers to recast the role and passed away in September 2011. Liam […]Read On »

SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE, which premieres tonight on Starz at 10 PM, is actually the second season of the SPARTACUS series, even though it’s the third year of the show. Series creator and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight understands how this might cause some head-scratching. In 2010’s SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND, Andy Whitfield starred as the famous historical figure. The season followed him through his early days of being enslaved, being trained as a gladiator and finally leading a revolt at the Ludus (gladiator training camp) that left its owner Batiatus (John Hannah) definitively dead and Batiatus’ pregnant wife Lucretia, played by […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA creator Steven S. DeKnight steps back in the arena – Part 1

Antonio Te Maioha in SPARTACUS - GODS OF THE ARENA | ©2011 Starz

Most TV series have their share of growing pains, but with Starz’s SPARTACUS, the behind the scenes complications have been almost as epic as the onscreen story. Shot in New Zealand with green-screen backgrounds to accommodate the surroundings of ancient Rome, the first season, SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND, starred Andy Whitfield as the title hero in his days as a slave/gladiator. The show was a major hit for Starz in its thirteen-episode run last year, and its ending, with the gladiators rebelling violently against their masters, seemed to set the stage for a Season Two depicting the beginnings of the […]Read On »
