DIE’CED: RELOADED is a remake/expansion of the 2023 fifty-minute film DIE’CED. The new release is half an hour longer than the original, with mostly the same cast and creative team.

We’re in ‘80s Seattle. At a psychiatric hospital, Dr. Graves (John Karyus) is examining the file on Benjamin (Jason Brooks), an especially violent inmate who killed his parents in especially gruesome fashion.

It’s not clear why Benjamin is allowed to wear a mask inside the institution, but he gets loose from his chains. He proceeds to display spectacular brutality in killing two people. These early, interlinked sequences seem to proclaim DIE’CED: RELOADED’s mission statement, which is to present as much gore and sadism as possible.

On the one hand, if this is the intent, director/writer Jeremy Rudd, who also crafted the story – additional scenes are credited to Wil Radcliffe – succeeds, so it’s not as though we’re seeing a misstep of some kind. On the other hand, it goes on long enough for us to contemplate why this is harder to watch (at least, for this reviewer) than, say, the TERRIFIER films, where there’s something else running alongside the violence. This is straightforward and, apart from a compelling display of the SFX makeup artists’ craft, seems to exist entirely for its own sake.

Then Benjamin is secretly set free by a surprisingly affectionate nurse, Amber (Christine Rose Allen), and goes about creating a Halloween costume for himself as a spooky scarecrow.

Benjamin does add some clowning to his homicidal routine, but it doesn’t quite seem to jibe with what we’re told about the character.

We’re also introduced to our other protagonist, high school student Cassandra (Eden Campbell), who lives with her dad (Nigel Vonas) and younger brother Tommy (Collin Fischer) in standard movie suburbia.

It’s here that DIE’CED: RELOADED starts to go off the rails. Even by standards of the genre, the long exchanges between Cassandra and her friends about boys and booze are very banal. There are also some strange lapses that could be very deadpan parody but seem more like actual mistakes, such as when Cassandra’s friend goes to a café and orders “a sandwich,” without further specificity.

Apart from the music score, the main reason for DIE’CED: RELOADED to happen in the ‘80s appears to be to avoid cellphones; otherwise, there’s little playing with the period.

There is a plot twist that we can guess ahead of time, mainly because there’s not much else to distract us, but it doesn’t fully pay off.

Brooks, who is imposingly tall, is a suitably scary boogeyman, and Campbell is fine in her role.

DIE’CED: RELOADED ultimately is mainly for gorehounds who have some patience with filler material. Slasher completionists will probably want to see it; those who want a little more from flying-body-parts fare may want to wait for another offering.
