The fourth and final season of RESIDENT ALIEN, Fridays on Syfy and USA and thereafter streaming on Peacock, began with cliffhangers for all the major characters in the small town of Patience, Colorado. Town mayor Ben Hawthorne, played by Levi Fiehler, and his wife Kate (Meredith Garretson), had learned that not only had they both been abducted multiple times by aliens, but that they have a baby daughter who was also kidnapped. At the end of Season 3, the baby was rescued by Asta (Sara Tomko) and D’Arcy (Alice Wetterlund), but they’ve had to hide her to protect her from re-abduction. Consequently, Ben and Kate are frantically searching for their younger child, to the extent of practically ignoring pre-teen son Max (Judah Prehn).

Fiehler, originally from Juneau, Alaska, works frequently in theatre. His television career includes being a series regular on FETCHING and recurring roles on IN THE MOMENT, MARS, and THE FOSTERS. His film resume includes MISSION CONTROL, DIAGNOSIS DELICIOUS, TOM HOLLAND’S TWISTED TALES, and WYATT EARP’S REVENGE.

At the London Hotel West Hollywood black carpet premiere for RESIDENT ALIEN’s fourth season, Fiehler talks where Ben has been and where he may be headed.

Given the gap between Seasons 3 and 4, did Fiehler have concerns about whether there would be a fourth season?

“Yeah, of course. Especially in the industry climate of shows getting canceled all the time. I was definitely grateful that we got picked up again and got a chance to wrap up some storylines this season, which will be nice, and I think the audience will appreciate.”

Does Ben live in Fiehler’s head between seasons, or is it a hard reboot when the actor comes back to set?

Fiehler laughs. “My memory is horrible, so it’s mostly trying to remember where we left off with the character, what they’ve been going through. Even doing press, sometimes it’s like, ‘Wait, we finished only two months ago and I already don’t remember what happened?’

“But for the most part, I think he’s really at the forefront, because there are a lot of similarities. I’m a people-pleaser, I’m neurotic, I’m a weirdo, so I’m not doing a Daniel Day-Lewis performance by any means. The apple doesn’t fall far from the character tree.”

Asked to describe Ben’s journey so far, Fiehler relates, “When I first got the pilot, I thought I had a grasp on who this character was. And then as the season progressed, I was like, ‘Wow, this guy is frankly an idiot.’ I couldn’t quite tell where it was going.

“And then there was the revelation that, to me at least, explained a lot of why he is the way he is, with finding out that he’s been getting abducted for his whole life. I think that it explained a lot, that he’s been this lab rat up in this spaceship for years and years, and that’s maybe why he’s this neurotic, strange person.

“This season has been fun, because we find out there’s this baby that’s been kidnapped, so it gives Ben in all his neuroses something to focus on and fight for, other than just worrying about himself all the time. And that was fun to play, especially next to this lady here.” He indicates his castmate Garretson, who is nearby while being interviewed by another journalist.

How does Ben feel about his relationship with son Max?

“I think there have been so many problems surrounding [Ben], at least from his perspective, Max has been the least of his worries. There are jokes within this season where we’re worried about the baby, or we’re worried about something else, and then Max shows up, and he’s like, ‘Did you notice I was gone?’ He’s kind of out of sight, out of mind.

“Back when I was a kid growing up, we’d just run around, and our parents would be like, ‘Where were you?’ So, I think it’s a throwback to a simpler time, when kids would just be out riding bikes. I think Max has been the least of our worries since Season 1, when he had the ‘I can see aliens’ thing. We kind of resolved that, and it’s just been, he’s on his own journey.

“And obviously, look at him.” Fiehler gestures to fellow actor Prehn, who is also being interviewed elsewhere on the carpet. “He’s getting older, we’re maybe not as hands-on as we used to be. We’re not the best parents.”

Fiehler doesn’t want to talk too much about Season 4, which had yet to air at all at the time of this interview. He does reveal his favorite sequence from previous years.

When [Ben and Kate] got to fight the bad guys in our kitchen. We had this big showdown at the end of Season 1 That was really fun. It sticks out as the first time I got to do some choreographed stunt stuff in my career. There are going to be some fun montages in this season as well that I can’t talk about.”

And what does Fiehler most hope people get out of RESIDENT ALIEN Season 4?

“If people just get a break from their troubles, an hourlong forget their worries and just have fun and can laugh, I think it would just bring joy to people who need it. That would be reward enough. I would love that.”
