Lauren Lane (Sophie Turner) has been acting since childhood on a family sitcom that has lasted through to the present. Now Lauren is pregnant, a data breach has made this known to the world, and she wants to avoid both the press and the father-to-be.

Faithful assistant Grace has what seems to be the perfect solution – a getaway at an isolated Air B&B cabin in the woods for Lauren and her beloved dog Georgie.

Unbeknownst to Lauren, the cabin is fitted with surveillance cameras, installed by the maintenance guy and his roommates (Rhys Coiro, Forrest Goodluck, Gianni Paolo) who sometimes burgle the place when the renters are out.

Meanwhile, Lauren’s baby daddy (Billy Campbell) first tries to talk her into an abortion. When that doesn’t work, he sends a hitman (Peter Mensah) to find and dispose of her before the scandal expands to include him.

With different treatment, the premise for TRUST might have been the basis for a Coen Brothers-style dark comedy, but the direction by Carlson Young of Gigi Levangie’s screenplay is pretty straight-faced.

While we’re concerned for Lauren and Georgie (for those who worry about such things, yes, Georgie is a plot point, but doesn’t die), for such a complicated set-up, there’s remarkably little strategizing going on.

How the burglars have been able to escape detection after hitting the same place multiple times is not sufficiently addressed. It’s also unclear what good the cameras are if the thieves don’t use them to avoid the renters.

More problematic, while Campbell’s character is meant to be reprehensible, the back story for him and Lauren is so disturbing that it warrants more serious treatment than TRUST allows. This is the sort of thing that begs for psychological examination, not just treated as one more plot device. We understand how it started, but not how Lauren had consensual sex with this man recently enough to be pregnant now.

Turner is a fine, sympathetic focal point and handles the physical rigors of her role with convincing strength and distress. Mensah is smooth as silk as the professional fixer, and Katey Sagal injects some humor as a dedicated dog rescuer.

Finally, TRUST is an odd title, given the film’s events. All trust is long gone between Lauren and her ex and the thieves don’t exactly trust each other. One could argue that there’s misplaced trust between Grace and the rental company, and the rental company and their maintenance man, but that seems a bit far removed from being a marquee element.

TRUST ultimately comes off as a Lifetime-type thriller with a name cast, good production values – and an aspect that’s more troubling than the movie can tackle effectively.
