TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Once Upon a Crime”

Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic and Taylor Kinney in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Once Upon A Crime" | ©2012 ABC/Karen Neal

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Kate Sargeant Director: Jeff Bleckner Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: February 27, 2012 At first, “Once Upon a Crime” feels like CASTLE has bought into Disney’s infamous synergy (not unlike some of the references that pop up with appalling regularity on ONCE UPON A CRIME, also on the Disney-owned ABC). You’ve got a woman dressed as Little Red Riding Hood turning up dead in Central Park with what looks like gashes from a wold all over her. The Snow White shows up dead with […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Linchpin”

Jennifer Beals, Josh Stamberg, Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Linchpin" | ©2012 ABC/Colleen Hayes

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Andrew W. Marlowe Director: Rob Bowman Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: February 20, 2012 “Linchpin” is one of those odd episodes of CASTLE that feels satisfying in the moment, but when you think about it later, something feels off. Maybe it’s because it falls back on the ol’ “Who’s the Real Bad Guy” routine that’s more than a little clicheed. Or that even hoarier cliche of having to save the world. So Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Becket (Stana Katic) just barely get out […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Pandora”

Nathan Fillion, Russell Edge and Stana Katic in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Pandora" | ©2012 ABC/Karen Neal

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: David Amann Director: Bryan Spicer Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: February 13, 2012 The interesting thing about “Pandora,” the first of a two-part CASTLE, is that it’s not about whodunit. We see that in the first scene, as a man comes crashing through an upper story window onto a car, then we see the killer looking through the window. Huh? Well, there’s lots of that floating around. Author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is the last to find out that his daughter Alexis […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “The Blue Butterfly”

Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion in CASTLE - "The Blue Butterfly" | ©2012 ABC/Karen Neal

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Rob Hanning Director: Thomas J. Wright Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: February 7, 2012 In “The Blue Butterfly,” the CASTLE team pays tribute to the great detective films of yore with a case that harkens back to June 1947, and let’s be real here, the result is little more than an excuse to get the cast all duded up in great 1940s fashions and hairstyles. But it’s a really good excuse! The 1940s scenes happen as Castle (Nathan Fillion) reads the 1947 diary […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “An Embarrassment of Bitches”

Hilarie Burton in CASTLE - Season 4 - "An Embarrassment of Bitches" | ©2012 ABC/Karen Neal

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Rob Hanning Director: Thomas J. Wright Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: January 23, 2012 Let’s just get this out of the way, “An Embarrassment of Bitches” is referring to the dogs. Bitch is a perfectly legitimate term for a female dog and is commonly used in dog show circles, where this episode of CASTLE opens. At first, it looks like we’re going to have a lovely take-off on Best In Show, with all the jealousy and sniping, but since it turns out that […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Dial M For Mayor”

Derek Webster in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Dial M For Mayor' | ©2012 ABC/Randy Holmes

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Christine Boylan Director: Kate Woods Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: January 16, 2011 If ever ABC did not do CASTLE any favors, it was with this episode, “Dial M for Mayor.” The promos made it look like Det. Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and crime-solving author dilletant Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) were going to be facing a serious rift in their good friendship over Castle’s support of his buddy Mayor Robert Weldon (Derek Webster). Nope. Have to take note – this episode was […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Till Death Do Us Part”

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: David Grae Director: Jeff Bleckner Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: January 9, 2011 For those who bemoaned the darker turn CASTLE had taken earlier this season, they have nought to complain about in “Till Death Do Us Part.” It is the final few days before Det. Kevin Ryan’s (Seamus Dever) wedding to Jenny Duffy-O’Malley (played by Seamus Dever’s real-life wife Juliana Dever) and a body has dropped out of a hotel window onto a fruit stand. Turns out the stiff has two names […]Read On »

TCA News: There will be no GLEE spin-off next year according to Fox

For awhile, it looked like Fox and GLEE co-creator Ryan Murphy were going to spin-off the show with its graduating characters next season. At today’s Fox TCA press session, Entertainment President Kevin Reilly says those plans have been scrapped. “We are graduating the characters, but Ryan and the guys have come up with a cool idea,” says Reilly. “It’s led to a very interesting idea for something cool to dig into next season. That’s all I can say about it now. It’s going to set us up in the spring with a batch of episodes and into next year.” LET […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Cuffed”

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe Director: John Terleskey Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: December 5, 2011 I have to give writers Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe a lot of credit for finding a legitimate way to tell a story in flashback (a tactic I usually find lazy and abhorrent). They start the “Cuffed” episode of CASTLE with crime-solving author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Det. Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) waking up hand-cuffed together. The flashback scenes happen […]Read On »

TV Review: EUREKA – Season 4 – “Do You See What I See?”

Animation takes over the EUREKA world for the Season 4 Christmas episode - "Do You See What I See?" | ©2011 Syfy

Stars: Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Joe Morton, Erica Cerra, Neil Grayston, Kavan Smith, Jordan Hinson, Trevor Jackson, Christopher Gauthier, Matt Frewer, Jim Parsons, Edward James Olmos Writers: Amy Berg & Eric Tuchman Director: Matt Hastings Network: Syfy, Tuesday @ 8 PM Original Telecast: December 6, 2011 Once in awhile, a TV show makes an episode that is both so good and so completely insane that one feels safe in showing it to people who have never seen the series before and may never see it again. EUREKA can now proudly join that select company with its fourth-year Christmas special, “Do […]Read On »
