RESIDENT ALIEN wrapped its four-season journey on USA and Syfy Channel cable earlier this year. The entire series is now available for streaming on Peacock, with Seasons 1-3 available on NBC Now, Netflix, Telemundo and other services.
In RESIDENT ALIEN, Alice Wetterlund plays D’Arcy Bloom, a local in the small mountain town of Patience, Colorado. D’Arcy is a former champion skier derailed by an accident. She is best friends with fellow Patience dweller Asta (Sara Tomko) and frenemies with the title character, an extraterrestrial who has taken on the form of town doctor Harry Vanderspiegle, played by Alan Tudyk, who is also one of the series’ producers.
Wetterlund was also a series regular on PEOPLE OF EARTH, another science-fiction comedy that involved alien abduction. The Minnesota native’s other film and TV credits include THE INTERVIEW, SILICON VALLEY, MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES, and INTERROGATION.
At a press event for RESIDENT ALIEN’s fourth season, Wetterlund discusses D’Arcy’s journey this year.
“I would say, for better or worse, this is the D’Arcy meets consequences season. She’s made a lot of maybe questionable decisions during her life and in her friendships and her relationships, and I think this season, more than any other, is when she starts to face up to some of the realities.”
Patience’s mayor Ben (Levi Fiehler) and his wife Kate (Meredith Garretson) learned in Season 3 that they had a baby daughter who had been taken by the aliens. (D’Arcy and Asta rescued the baby, but they haven’t yet told the couple at the start of Season 4.) Is there any possibility that D’Arcy was abducted and has a baby she doesn’t know about?
“For some reason, I feel like D’Arcy would know. Do you know what I’m saying? She’s somebody who’s very in touch with the reproductive piece of herself, and I think she’s barren, and I think she would know.”

D’Arcy and Harry have long detested each other, partly on general principle and partly because each is jealous of the other’s friendship with Asta. But in Season 3, it seems like D’Arcy and Harry are developing a grudging tolerance for each other, if only because they have to work together so often to save Asta and Earth in general.
“D’Arcy and Harry – for me, the relationship is crystal clear,” Wetterlund says. “They have someone [Asta] they both love in common and they don’t like each other but, like two parents who have divorced and they’re sharing custody of a child, they have a civil relationship, and sometimes they need each other and they have to rely on each other. So, for better or worse, they do, and I really love playing that relationship.”
In Season 4, Episode 3 – which could not be discussed in detail at the time this interview was conducted – D’Arcy time-travels with Harry back in the 1970s. This meant that both characters had to dress appropriately for the era. Did Wetterlund get to have any input into D’Arcy’s fashion choices, which were, let us say, unusual even by ‘70s standards?
“Yeah, I did have some input,” Wetterlund laughs. “That was maybe one of the most fun fitting days I’ve ever had.”
Tudyk directed the first two episodes of Season 4. How was the experience of being directed by her costar?

“Well, I wouldn’t allow him to direct me, so I wouldn’t show up on set that day,” Wetterlund jokes. “No, he was amazing. Not only was Alan incredible, but both our showrunners – our showrunner and head writer Chris Sheridan, and Robbie McNeill, our exec producer, were both sick at home for two weeks. So, Alan was by himself in charge of the entire production for two weeks. And it was a lot. It was a little bit like the kids had taken over the daycare.”
Does D’Arcy live in Wetterlund’s head between seasons?
“D’Arcy is always close to me. I think that the character became a person, when Chris and I talked about her before we shot the first season. And so, at heart, she’s kind of based on me. I think of D’Arcy as a younger me anyway, so …”
