THE INFLUENCER PROJECT begins with the online information, “This film is influenced by real events.”

This is hard to argue with: there really are influencers who can make a good living by being paid to promote brands, and these influencers sometimes attract unpleasant and even dangerous stalkers.

For that matter, THE INFLUENCER PROJECT stars Chiara King as an Instagram/TikTok influencer named Chiara King, and director Mike Nybroe, who wrote the screenplay with Lars Ap and Anders Jon, plays a documentary filmmaker named Mike Nybroe, so there are people with these names who have these or similar jobs.

THE INFLUENCER PROJECT opens with a pretty young woman, Alma (Ronja Hauge Schierup), welcoming us to her livestream. She seems uneasy and we soon learn why.

This start makes us think that perhaps THE INFLUENCER PROJECT may have a supernatural component. It’s not too spoilery to say that it does not.

We then meet Chiara on her own stream. English, attractive and personable, she’s up to 1.5 million followers after what she calls the “viral kissing video.” She has a supportive manager, Alice (Jazmine Summer), who encourages Chiara’s ambition to get to 10 million followers. Chiara feels that in order to reach her goal, she’ll have to do something no one has done before to get there and she’s willing to do whatever that is.

Chiara is invited to Copenhagen, Denmark, by a tourist organization that wants a documentary crew, led by Mike, to follower her around the picturesque city for a week. While Chiara is there, clothing and jewelry and other businesses pay her to show off their wares.

But a stalker who calls himself “King_Slayer” and whose image is a metal mask with chainmail appears in Chiara’s feed, telling her to stop posting, or else he’ll rape and kill her. Then King_Slayer’s own live feed shows he’s getting close enough to Chiara to record her without being seen.

Apart from an initial reaction of, “Wait, Chiara’s being stalked by Jaime Lannister?”, there’s a lot to unpack here.

On the one hand, there is some legitimate discussion of exactly what it is that successful influencers do, and whether and why that’s a good or a bad thing. There’s also a discussion of what may drive online stalkers.

When THE INFLUENCER PROJECT starts to lean into SCREAM-like story curlicues, it works well enough as it goes. However, lacking SCREAM’s self-awareness, the movie bypasses opportunities to delve into what being an influencer does for and to Chiara in psychological terms. (The rape threats are a major “ick” factor, albeit that aspect doesn’t come to pass.)

Additionally, we get a whole lot of what looks like actual influencer material, to the point where, unless that is one’s preferred form of entertainment (and maybe even then), a lot of viewers will feel they’ve had enough of watching a stranger, i.e., Chiara, who we don’t know as a person very well, eat and go shopping, even if it is in Copenhagen, well before THE INFLUENCER PROJECT goes full slasher.

However, this may be the point. What THE INFLUENCER PROJECT shares with movies like INFLUENCER and INFLUENCERS (apart from title similarity) is the notion that influencers are such an irritating phenomenon that they can incite homicidal mania. While most won’t think Chiara deserves to be killed or even terrorized for her chosen form of self-expression and employment, many will sympathize with the bad guys’ desire not to be subjected to insincerity and paid fake enthusiasm.
