Finally a new comedy series that gets it right from the start. BEN AND KATE is a refreshingly funny, cute and quirky new show created by Dana Fox that is a perfect companion for Fox’s Tuesday night comedies RAISING HOPE and NEW GIRL.
The series stars Dakota Johnson as Kate Fox a sweet young adult who made a big mistake right before graduating college – she got pregnant. Her daughter Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones) is a wonderful and smart kid and even though she’s struggling to make ends meet, she gets by.
However, her misguided brother Ben (Nat Faxon) shows up in town, looking to stop the wedding of an old flame and inadvertently becomes Kate’s new go-to guy. Kate needs someone to lean on, Ben needs help from himself and the two decide to work together to help each other and raise Maddie.
It’s a simple premise, but it’s refreshing to have a comedy that isn’t about the leads getting together or dealing with their past love struggles. It’s about family and the cast is perfect. Faxon is a dork and brings energy to every scene and Johnson is infectious and cute.
Even their friends have an edge and aren’t overly annoying as has been the case in sitcoms during the last two years. There’s Ben’s best friend Tommy (Echo Kellum) and Kate’s British BFF BJ (Lucy Punch). Kellum and Punch are different and weird and complement the show’s goofy tone.
If any series deserves to succeed it’s this winning and fun comedy. It’s not overly crass, it’s not ridiculously dirty, it’s simply funny with characters you want to spend some time with. It also shares director Jake Kasdan who steered NEW GIRL in the right direction with its pilot last year. Hopefully that’s all the good luck this series needs to break out among the heavy comedy pack this fall.
