While INFLUENCERS does not pick up immediately after the end of 2023’s INFLUENCER, it’s extremely helpful to watch the earlier film before diving into the sequel. In both, the main characters are Madison White (Emily Tennant) and influencer-hating fraudster CW (Cassandra Naud). INFLUENCERS fills us in to the required degree on their previous individual and shared histories, but INFLUENCER gives us more nuance and a greater rooting interest.

In INFLUENCER, we saw Madison successfully survive CW’s attempt to passively kill her by stranding her on an uninhabited and uncharted island off the coast of Thailand. Madison turned the tables and marooned CW there at the end of the movie, but there was little doubt our crafty antagonist would find a way back to civilization.

Sure enough, CW is now in the south of France, celebrating her first anniversary with adoring local girlfriend Diane (Lisa Delamar). Diane thinks CW is a broke American student who is in the country for her education.

First, though, we see what turns out to be a flash-forward of a woman (Georgina Campbell) in a taxi, having a panic attack so visceral that at first we think maybe she’s in labor. The woman flees the vehicle, runs through an empty mansion to its outdoor swimming pool, where she slits her throat.

We eventually get to who the woman is and why she feels impelled to take this extreme action. First, though, CW and Diane go off for a romantic weekend. CW is triggered by several overly chipper influencers they encounter and proceeds to sneak away from Diane to commit more murders.

While the police have no idea CW is connected to these crimes, or her real identity, Madison remains on international law enforcement radar. While cleared of charges, Madison is still suspected of being the culprit responsible for crimes actually committed by CW in Thailand. Madison has been unsuccessfully trying to prove her innocence ever since.

When Madison sees an image of CW online, she heads to France in pursuit. Realizing that Madison is after her, CW flees to Bali. A bro-sphere podcaster (Jonathan Whitesell) and his toxic pal Cameron (Dylan Playfair) become entangled in the cat-and-mouse proceedings.

Writer/director Kurt David Harder, who also helmed and scripted the first INFLUENCER, has a knack for capturing the powerful physical beauty of locations, where he sets a whole bunch of twists that keep us on our toes. In very broad strokes, we can guess certain things, but how we get from Point A to Point B is often bracingly surprising.

As before, Naud demonstrates agility in juggling all of CW’s public masks that persuasively conceal the rage beneath. Tennant remains sympathetic and grounded. Delamar is sweet and open, and Campbell, Whitesell and Playfair handle their characters’ idiosyncrasies with flair.

INFLUENCERS isn’t enormously deep, but it’s a well-done, enjoyable bloody puzzle box with travelogue benefits.
