THE TEN BEST MOVIES OF 2025
- SINNERS – It starts out by telling us that some music is so extraordinary that it is magical, transcending space and time, and damn if this 1930s-era story of twin brothers, their juke joint, local racism and vampires doesn’t make us believe. Featuring an outstanding performance by Michael B. Jordan in a dual role and a star-making turn by young Michael Caton as the young bluesman whose tunes draw in the living and the undead.

- HAMNET – This adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel about William Shakespeare’s creation of HAMLET is an exploration of passion and grief that winds up being surprisingly uplifting.
- STRANGE JOURNEY: THE STORY OF ROCKY HORROR – A documentary that gives the history of a stage show, a movie, an enduring social phenomenon and Richard O’Brien in vivid, endearing fashion.
- RABBIT TRAP – A modern-ish (1970s) folk fantasy that has roots in myth and sound and connection.
- DUST BUNNY – This reviewer swears she is not on a Leporidae kick, and while they are both fantasies, DUST BUNNY and the aforementioned RABBIT TRAP are extremely different films. DUST BUNNY is a splendidly absurd and beautiful funny dark fairytale about a hitman, a little girl, and the monster under her bed.
- MATERIALISTS – A romantic comedy that’s actually romantic and funny and, bonus, has some astute observations about how social class and finances can and can’t influence choices of the heart.
- SUPERMAN – Sticking the landing on yet another edition of this DC hero seemed impossible, and yet this is charming, distinctive and actually about what it means to be a decent person (whether of terrestrial origin or not).
- PETER HUJAR’S DAY – This film about the photographer, a dramatized and visually imaginative version of his conversation with Linda Rosenkranz, is artful and yet feels like hanging out with friends.
- BLACK BAG – A first-rate spy thriller, with plenty of twists and true romance.

FRANKENSTEIN – Writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s version of the Mary Shelley classic is solidly on the side of the monster, which opens up multiple new dimensions.
