TV Review: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES – Season 2- “Daddy Issues”

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is a show that has really grown into one of my weekly must-watch shows. I was never a devotee of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER or CHARMED or even ANGEL, I didn’t really discover series like that until much later on DVD. Having said that, I started with episode one of DIARIES, simply because it came on when I needed a genre show to watch since TRUE BLOOD was on hiatus. I admit I wasn’t instantly sucked into the show, I had to warm up to it, but the series has definitely found its pacing and its overreaching arcs and everything runs like a well-oiled machine.

When approaching a list with the title: “The top ten good things about BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 8 comics,”  a person has to stop and really consider the subject matter. In Hallmark Channel’s telefilm GOODNIGHT FOR JUSTICE, airing tonight, Luke Perry plays John Goodnight, a circuit judge in the Old West who rides from town to town, administering the law as he sees fit. Ever since BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER went off the air, there’s been a hole in fans hearts hoping for a resurrection (and the movie reboot without creator Joss Whedon is not it).

However, the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER comic book that has been “executive produced” and periodically written by Whedon himself over the last four years as SEASON 8 and it’s been an absolute joy. It’s brought back the universe we all loved with the correct voice and tone. There’s been death and surprises along the way and it truly is the next best thing to having a Season 8 back on television.

During today’s TCAs for Fox’s Studio Day, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER actress Alyson Hannigan commented on the recent news that BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER was going to be made into a feature film sans Joss Whedon. Needless to say, she isn’t too happy about it. In response to the question about would she like to crap on the movie, she responds: “A BUFFY [THE VAMPIRE SLAYER] movie without Joss, I would crap on that,” Hannigan told the press. “Joss was Buffy.” I guess that puts the kibosh on any guest appearance from Willow. Tim Minear served as consulting producer on Season One of DOLLHOUSE and executive producer, with creator Joss Whedon, on Season Two of the short-lived Fox series.
