First Look Photo: THE SMURFS return as CGI creations

Like ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS and YOGI BEAR, another beloved animation franchise is getting the live action/CGI treatment with THE SMURFS. Opening August 3, 2011, the film takes the Smurfs from their safe little village to the mean streets of New York (and our reality). Gargamel is obviously behind it all. No, it’s not a TRANSFORMERS spin-off. Instead REAL STEEL is a crazy new science-fiction action film starring Hugh Jackman who plays a promoter who manages robot vs. robot boxing matches. It sounds crazy, but this thing could actually work. It also has Steven Spielberg as an executive producer and A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM‘s Shawn Levy at the helm. To get a sneak peak, check out the brand new stills and the teaser trailer below. The film opens October 7, 2011.

Rapunzel let down her hair, finally (and in 3-D) as Disney held the World Premiere of their new animated film TANGLED at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. It was a long backdrop that was painted to look like Rapunzel’s hair. Wigs were handed out to some of the photographers, myself included and we wore them while shooting. AXclusive: TANGLED star Mandy Moore planning new album for 2011 with potential assist by Alt rocker (and husband) Ryan Adams

With Mandy Moore making vocal and musical waves on the big screen playing Rapunzel in Disney’s forthcoming animated feature TANGLED (their 50th, which opens Wednesday) the singer/actress spoke with ASSIGNMENT X recently about the status of her new album. “Hopefully it will out next year some time,” says Moore. “I’m still writing at this point and want to be done writing by the end of the year and start recording next year. It hasn’t necessarily taken too much shape yet.”

Next summer, Pixar and Disney will release CARS 2 – the sequel to their 2006 animated hit. Where the first movie was a fish-out-of-water tale of arrogant race car Lightening McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) who learns about taking it easy, taking responsibility and helping others, the latest film takes McQueen and tow truck Mater overseas where they become spies. Check out the new trailer released today and the brand new teaser poster above. CARS 2 arrives in theaters on June 24, 2011
