Here’s something you don’t see every year. The 89th Academy Awards presentation on ABC network on February 26, 2017, will go down in history. Yes, the Best Picture Oscar for MOONLIGHT, the low-budget drama about a young gay black man at three stages of his life, is unique in many ways. When the time came to present Best Picture, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read off […]Read On »

LL Cool J is a very busy man. He’s a multi-Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/music producer, he is of course the star of CBS’s NCIS: LA and he’ll be hosting the 55th Annual Grammy Awards this Sunday night for CBS. On the one hand, at a Q and A panel for the Television Critics Association, both LL Cool J and CBS executive vice-president in charge of specials, music and live events Jack Sussman acknowledge that the performer’s presence as a network regular was perhaps a factor in his hosting the awards this year. “Well, I’m thinking it had something to do with it,” […]Read On »

Desert Flower

Most film festivals like to wrap things up with a kind of ‘best of the fest’ summation. But what if a festival was the best of not just one fest but of many fests? Then they would be the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Now in its 24th year, Palm Springs’ festival is held January 3rd-14th and one could argue it’s the first big film festival of the year. But it’s not. Contrary to its date it’s really the last film festival of the year. Especially since Sundance starts a few weeks later and is the real official beginning […]Read On »

And the Oscar winners for The 84th Annual Academy Awards are …

Producer Thomas Langmann accepts the award for Best Picture for THE ARTIST at the 84th Annual Academy Awards | ©2012 A.M.P.A.S.

While the 85th Annual Academy Awards was short of surprises (or for that matter an truly engaging telecast), it did have Billy Crystal returning as host for the ninth time). Although he played it safe, and came dangerously close to crossing the line at others, he still provided a polished sheen that kept the proceedings afloat. Should he have been funnier? Probably. Was he better than James Franco and Anne Hathaway last year? Definitely, yes. However, the Oscars are really about the winners, so without further ado, here is the master list of who got what including the slam dunk […]Read On »

THE KING'S SPEECH wins Best Picture at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27, 2011 | ©2011 A.M.P.A.S.

There’s not much to say about the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, except that as much as they promised to be young and hip by hiring James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host, it was still the same old Academy Awards. That said, THE KING’S SPEECH took home the Best Picture title, while frontrunners Colin Firth won for Best Actor in SPEECH and Natalie Portman for Best Actress in BLACK SWAN. The full list of winners are below … Best Picture Iain Canning, Emile […]Read On »
