Tamara Taylor has played Jeffersonian Lab chief Dr. Camille Saroyan for eleven of BONES twelve seasons. Over the years, Cam – an ex-girlfriend of FBI Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) – has adopted teenaged daughter Michelle (Tiffany Hines), made peace with her sister Felicia (Raney Branch), married longtime boyfriend/lab assistant Dr. Arastoo Vaziri (Pej Vahdat), risked her life on the job and suffered through innumerable explosive lab experiments concocted by Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne).

With BONES: THE FINAL CHAPTER coming to a conclusion Tuesday, March 28 on Fox Network, Taylor shares her thoughts about the series coming to a close in this exclusive chat with Assignment X.

ASSIGNMENT X: How do you feel after eleven years on BONES?

TAMARA TAYLOR: Oh, my God. It’s so bittersweet, there are so many emotions.

[calling out to Alex Hughes as he passes] Hi, cutie! He’s such an angel. He did a video retrospective for us that was so cathartic and beautiful and so thoughtful.

AX: Has Cam gotten to do everything you wanted her to do, or is there anything you wish you could have gotten to do as Cam?

TAYLOR: You know, pretty much. I love that Cam’s finally gotten to have a personal life that’s healthy and wonderful and yay. So I’d say it’s pretty well-balanced.

AX: Do we get to see Cam and Arastoo’s wedding?

TAYLOR: You see that we’re married. I’ll say that. You get to see Cam and Arastoo in their wedding gear.

AX: Over the eleven seasons, what have been some of your favorite things?

TAYLOR: Oh, my gosh. Episode-wise, I think the Gravedigger episode with TJ and Emily [Deschanel, as Temperance “Bones” Brennan] buried was one of my favorite episodes. It was one of the first times I’d seen our show go that deep and that lovely. And of course the Norwegian death metal episode, because that was another moment where not only was it surreal for me to know that Norwegian death metal exists, but we got to see John Francis Daley [as Dr. Lance Sweets], David Boreanaz and Emily have a really beautiful series of scenes where they got real. So I would say those are some of the standout episodes. The Pelant [serial killer] stuff was super-scary and creepy, I loved that. There are just so many, it’s kind of hard to decide.

AX: In the eleven years, what was the grossest thing you had to deal with?

TAYLOR: Oh, wow. We had to deal with a body that was so decomposed, it was in a bathtub in bleach, and the only thing that was left was the [scalp on the] skull with some hair, and the rest was like stew. That was pretty gross, and that was second season or third season. The scalp was dangling hair and just fleshy bits, it was pretty rank. And slicing a brain, and the description in the script was that “Cam is slicing a brain like Carpaccio.” That was pretty gross.

AX: And your favorite fake location – California made to look like somewhere else?

TAYLOR: Oh, my God. That is a good question. I feel like we’ve spent so much time in so many wooded areas, I wouldn’t even know where we were half the time.

AX: What about when Cam and Booth went to Tehran to rescue Arastoo?

TAYLOR: That was the Twentieth Century Fox lot. That was hilarious. It was like, at least it could have been Westwood [a Southern California neighborhood with a lot of Iranian-American shops].

AX: When did you start thinking, “Okay, this is over, and what do I do next?”

TAYLOR: Do you know, it’s amazing, because Season 11 ended and it was pretty uncomfortable, because we didn’t know if we were ending it-ending it, because it was on the bubble, and contracts hadn’t been signed. Usually, we’d had the luxury of going into hiatus knowing that we were coming back. Season 11, not so much. They had to write it like it was a series finale as well as a season finale, which was really uncomfortable, because we weren’t sure if we were saying goodbye forever, or just goodbye for two months. That was awkward.

AX: Since Season 11 ended on a cliffhanger with Brennan in apparent mortal jeopardy, there might have been a fan uprising if they’d ended it there …

TAYLOR: Exactly. Because they had to sort of split the difference, which was really awkward. So to know that we were coming back and we got twelve episodes to wrap it up was such a blessing.

AX: Do you know what you are doing next, or what you’d like to do next?

TAYLOR: I am open. It seems like an interesting new world out there, and really exciting. So we’ll see.

AX: What would you most like people to know about BONES?

TAYLOR: That we are so grateful to have been able to bring it to our fans for twelve years. We were as happy making it as fans were watching it, truly.
