The 89th Academy Awards presentation on ABC network on February 26, 2017, will go down in history. Yes, the Best Picture Oscar for MOONLIGHT, the low-budget drama about a young gay black man at three stages of his life, is unique in many ways. However, what a lot of Oscar viewers may remember most about the evening is that, for the first time ever, the wrong movie got announced as the winner before it got straightened out onstage.

When the time came to present Best Picture, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read off the title of the musical LA LA LAND, which had already won for Actress in a Leading Role (Emma Stone), Directing (Damien Chazelle), Original Song (“”City of Stars” by Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul), Score (Justin Hurwitz) and Cinematography (Linus Sandgren). MOONLIGHT had won for Adapted Screenplay (by director Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney) and Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali).

The LA LA LAND producers gave acceptance speeches before one of their number, Jordan Horowitz, was informed of the error onstage. He announced the correction and the MOONLIGHT team was brought up to receive the Best Picture award. Both groups handled their evident astonishment with aplomb, the LA LA LAND producers congratulating the MOONLIGHT people and MOONLIGHT director Jenkins delivering a heartfelt speech.

Beatty explained he had been handed an envelope that said “Emma Stone, LA LA LAND,” which he’d handed to Dunaway, and host Jimmy Kimmel apologized, all part of the telecast.

The firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers, which tabulates the Oscar votes, released this statement through Disney, ABC Network’s parent company: “We sincerely apologize to MOONLIGHT, LA LA LAND, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and, when discovered, [this] was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

“We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”
