I’m busy. You’re busy. We’re all busy.

We work. We have hobbies. We have pets, spouses and/or kids. We have obligations and responsibilities. We have stuff to do. We can’t see all the movies we want to see. Who has time to see every movie? Movie critics. I mean, that’s their job, right? The rest of us have other, less cool jobs that don’t involve getting to see all the movies.

But, we can make some time to watch a few movie trailers. They are short, and you get the gist of the movie. That’s good enough. You see what actors are in the movie. You get a basic idea of the story. Maybe there’s a line such as  “I’m too old for this s#$%” or “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore,” or some other played-out line of dialogue.

Sure, judging a movie based on the trailer is a bit like judging a book by its cover and – maybe – reading the synopsis on the back, and apparently that’s something we’re not supposed to do. “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, I say “Screw that.” I’m a rebel, Dottie. I play by my own rules. I ain’t got time to read an entire book. Let’s do this. Let’s judge some movie trailers.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (May 6)

Did you watch the trailer? Spider-Man, you guys! We talked a lot about “Civil War” on Assignment X’s podcast, THE POP SHOW this week (coming soon). This trailer works like any great trailer should. It makes me excited to see the movie without giving everything about the movie away (I’m looking at you, BATMAN V SUPERMAN). I’m not going to write a ton here, because you should listen to the podcast. Grade: A

FINDING DORY (June 17)

First of all, LOL that this trailer uses Peter Gabriel’s SOLSBURY HILL as its soundtrack. That’s a romantic comedy trailer trope that is so overused that even Gabriel himself is tired of it. I’ve got to knock it down one grade for song selection. However, that said, Pixar has one of the best track records in the business. For every THE GOOD DINOSAUR, there’s a THE INCREDIBLES, WALL-E, UP, INSIDE OUT, MONSTERS, INC., TOY STORY, TOY STORY 2, TOY STORY 3 … and I think you get the idea. If you don’t like FINDING NEMO, well then, I’m sorry to hear about your cold, dead heart. Dory was very funny in FINDING NEMO, but she wasn’t the star. She might one of those characters that’s funny in small doses, but the trailer makes me think she can carry the entire film. Grade: B

MY BIG, FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 (March 25)

“Finally!” – said no one after seeing this trailer. Grade: D

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING (June 3)

The Lonely Island practically invented the social media shareable short. Remember when everyone had LAZY SUNDAY on their MySpace page? Double true! Expectations are high for their first full-length movie, and this raunchy red band (wheeeee!) trailer doesn’t disappoint. It looks like it’s got the Lonely Island guys doing what they do best. Plus, any movie with Sarah Silverman AND Bill Hader in it is going to get my money. Grade: A

GHOSTBUSTERS – International Trailer (June 15)

The guys and I have already shared our thoughts and feelings about the new GHOSTBUSTERS movie coming out this summer on THE POP SHOW podcast. However, I think the new international GHOSTBUSTERS trailer makes the movie look a little more promising. It makes the latest installment in the franchise look less like a shot-for-shot remake and more of the reboot we’re told it is. Each of the leading ladies get a moment to shine, plus, there’s more Chris Hemsworth in it, and I’m OK with that. Grade: B
