GLEE continues its downward spiral into the Season 4 abyss with another theme week – Steve Wonder.

With Rachel (Lea Michele) getting her Broadway callback for FUNNY GIRL and Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) getting a thank you call from Rachel for all he did for her, the theme is fitting. It’s about embracing everything that is wonderful.

As Regionals arrive, former classmates return once again to help coach the new peeps. We get Kurt (Chris Colfer) returning home to check in on his dad (Mike O’Malley) who is finding out if he is cancer-free (he is).

Mercedes (Amber Riley), who has been completely marginalized this season, gets a few episode’s worth of an arc crammed into the same hour. We find out she made an album, but her producer wanted her to show some skin to sell some records and she refused to do that and compromise her beliefs. And then there’s Mike (Harry Shun Jr.) who comes back for reasons still unknown (don’t these kids have lives?)

With Artie (Kevin McHale) graduating, we discover he was selected to be in Brooklyn Film School. Then there’s the strange intervention by Kitty (Becca Tobin) who tries to convince Artie it’s okay for him to leave Lima and his mom to live out his dream. Everything seems to lining up for a huge New York Glee club reunion.

Meanwhile, Blaine (Darren Criss) decides he wants to marry Kurt, but Kurt’s dad says they’re not ready. Blaine isn’t so sure.

Then there’s Rachel finally getting some support by her dance instructor Cassandra (Kate Hudson) who has been a bitch on wheels to her all year.

And where did Finn (Cory Monteith) go? He was supposed to be co-instructing the Glee club for Regionals and now he’s suddenly AWOL. Well, Monteith is in rehab in real life, so instead of mentioning something about why he isn’t there, the writers of the show hope we won’t notice him there at all.

This all reminds us of the many problems GLEE has faced in Season 4. It’s great seeing Kurt, Mike and Mercedes back in the glee room. It’s what made the show work. Having the cast spread out across the globe, just doesn’t work. It needs to be either or.

Yes, people move on, but the show should have made a decision early this year of how to handle this transition in a better fashion. It will be interesting to see what the plan is for next year, but I still wouldn’t be surprised if the entire show was moved to New York and all the graduates form their own Glee club there.

It would make sense, but then, would it still be GLEE?

The show’s been a bust throughout most of Season 4, so I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try.
