“Before Sunset” is the next to the last episode of this third season of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on THE CW. This series has had some interesting ups and downs, but one thing is for sure, it never ceases to be one of my favorite “guilty pleasures” on television.

I’ve been bitching for most of the season that I wanted Klaus (Joseph Morgan) out of the picture. We’ve gotten the point, he is the biggest and baddest of the original vampires and killing him is not only almost impossible, it is also not a great idea since any that descend from his vampire bloodline will die shortly after. Finally in this episode it seems that I have gotten my wish and the Klaus storyline has been sent to sleep with the fishes. For now.  Bonnie (Kat Graham) putting the magical whammy on Klaus (inadvertently) and turning him into a desiccated corpse seems to be a good solution for this particular problem. The Salvatore Brothers go sink Klaus into the ocean and weight him down in a nice deep spot (I’m thinking the Mariana Trench) where no one will be able to even stumble across him in the future.

Of course, I’m thinking too logically about this. Klaus will be dumped someplace where he can be gotten to again, and eventually they will dust him off and trot him out again as a really bad man with a mission. In the meantime we have Alaric (Matthew Davis) to worry about. Never mind the fact that he’s a bat s**t crazy original level vampire who only has one goal, the eradication of all vampires, he’s also not a very nice guy and he has no problem killing humans that he feels have betrayed humankind. Which is pretty much what it looks like he’s planning to do to parts of the town council.

So is Alaric a more viable bad guy, or is this just another bad idea in a long string of bad ideas with this character? Or, is he a more sympathetic villain since he was recently a “good guy”? I can’t make up my mind. Certainly he’s a lot more interesting and now he’s not just a punching bag for every single supernatural being that comes after Elena (Nina Dobrev). We’ll see where they go with this. I think the easiest way to fix everything is to kill Elena and turn her into a vampire. That finishes off Alaric, and for once Elena will be a little bit more able to defend herself and not have to rely on everyone else to save her all the time. Plus, it would make her useless to Klaus, just like Katherine (Nina Dobrev) before her.

Speaking of Elena can I address the single most stupid moment in this episode? Elena is back home with her friends after having probably about half if not more of her body’s blood supply drained from her and put in to go bags for Klaus, so what’s the best idea the teenage brain trusts can come up with? Let’s give the girl suffering from massive blood loss Tequila shooters! Hard alcohol + massive blood loss = date rape Elena for some lucky guy or girl in the crowd. Unbelievable. Clearly THE VAMPIRE DIARIES writers came up with that idea while trying to breathe with plastic bags on their heads.
