Besides the fact that LONGMIRE is just a really well done series, (which got a season two pick up already!) each week has a few feel and flavor to the cases that Walt (Robert Taylor) and his deputies have to investigate. I like the fact that it’s not the MURDER SHE WROTE formula, where it’s always a murder and someone close to the lead character gets blamed.

This week’s LONGMIRE, “Dog Soldier” is yet another really strong offering for the series. Walt and his team are calling in on a missing child case, which leads to more missing kids, and that leads to a conspiracy being perpetrated against the Cheyenne on the Reservation.

I wonder a lot of the time with series, especially crime dramas, whether or not they are “ripped from the headlines” in terms of taking story ideas from actual events. If this particular storyline from LONGMIRE is based on actual events then I just cringe inside. The big bad of this story (warning spoilers) is the fact that white social workers are essentially abducting kids from the Rez and giving them to white families so they can reap the profits from the government. That is just sickening. As if whites haven’t done enough to Native Americans. It’s certainly something I wasn’t aware of, and I would assume most people who don’t live anywhere near a reservation wouldn’t be aware of either.

Once again this episode we are teased with quick images of Walt, and we know it’s connected to Denver now. These are scenes that I assume are tied to Walt being stitched up by the medicine man as Henry (Lou Diamond Phillps) looks on. What the hell happened?! I love stuff like this because it keeps a sort of through line for the season, but I want answers!

Speaking of Henry Standing Bear….we got a LOT more of him this episode. I can never get enough of him. That is a simple statement of truth. I’ve loved Lou Diamond Phillips for years, and he was one of the first people I ever interviewed when I started out in journalism for THE TRIANGLE; so as much screen time as they want to give him on LONGMIRE I am happy with.

Really enjoyed some of the office interplay in this episode too. Cady (Cassidy Freeman) and Vic (Katee Sackoff) having a bit of faceoff was nice, and Vic picking up on the fact that Branch (Bailey Chase) knows how Cady takes her coffee should be an interesting payoff later.

Still on a quest of Rainier Beer here in LA. So if anyone knows where I can find it, don’t hesitate to send me a message through our editorial email. Until next week keep the home fires lit folks!
