“An Incredibly Beautiful Thing” is yet another episode of LONGMIRE where you really don’t have a specific idea of where the story is going to go. I like the fact that this series, even though it’s set in a small town, has a width and breadth of diversity for the types of stories that it tells.  This wasn’t as twisty and turvy as some of the mysteries that the show portrays, but it certainly had a heap of crazy with a side of fried crazy just to make sure you weren’t going to go away hungry.

The episode opens with a crazy, bedraggled woman in a gas station and a murdered attendant, and then just escalates the levels of nut job from there. Before we’re done we have a mini Jonestown or Waco smack in the middle of cattle country.

One of the BEST things about this episode is Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) tracking the girl from the gas station back to where she was either taken or came from. As I’ve said time and again in my reviews Henry is my favorite whether in print or on the screen, and I love Lou! Seeing him confronted with armed security men didn’t actually end quite the way I thought it would…meaning I really expect both security men on the ground either unconscious or moaning. Henry was clearly playing nice.

The other part of that, which was once again a nice addition to the episode was the fact that The Ferg (Adam Bartley) was REALLY useful with his mineralogy knowledge! In the books, The Ferg is really kind of a write off from the word go, and once he’s gone he is certainly not missed. In the show, I feel like they’ve created a more loveable and sympathetic character and given the role of jackass to Branch (Bailey Chase) instead. Plus Henry’s reaction to Ferg actually being useful is kind of priceless.

Speaking of tracking…we got a bit more of the Denver story out of this episode again. Now we know that Henry followed Walt (Robert Taylor) to Denver; possibly without (OK more than likely without) his permission. So what the hell was Walt getting himself mixed up with in Denver? Following a suspect or an escapee? Why all the secrets? What happened to his back? Why would Walt operate outside the law for something? Hopefully all of these questions and more will be answered by the finale.

Nice that Branch actually cares enough about Cady (Cassidy Freeman) to come running to her rescue when she’s being attacked by a crazy cultist with a knife. Too bad for the social worker that he’s a bit slower than one would hope. Plus we now know that Vic (Katee Sackhoff) can definitely take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’. Hit by a car and all the old girl needs is an ice pack while she makes calls and keeps on working.

No new LONGMIRE this week. Next week the series will return with a new episode, and remember it’s the first of the last two of this season so savor it people, because it will be a bit before we get another one!
