I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again the DALLAS theme is one of the best TV theme songs ever, instrumental or lyrical. And to boot, the show, too is one of the best ever. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new DALLAS inspired other ’80s nighttime soap operas – as they were once called – to be revamped. The return of FALCON CREST and KNOT’S LANDING may be just around the corner. Although, neither was ever as good. So, for now we settle on the best and Southfork.

At Southfork, Elena (Jordana Brewster) soon finds out about Rebecca’s (Julie Gonzalo) pregnancy and tells Christopher(Jesse Metcalfe). This brings Christopher straight to Rebecca accusing her of plotting some trap to keep him.

Meanwhile, John Ross (Josh Henderson) asks cousin Lucy (Charlene Tilton) for help in allowing him to drill on Southfork. She refuses, citing loyalty to Bobby (Patrick Duffy). But poor old John Ross has got himself in quite a pickle and with dear old dad J.R. (Larry Hagman) on “vacation” he is all alone in his dilemmas. Firstly, he is in deep trouble with foreign buyers whom he’s promised oil to but can’t get. Then, Marta a.k.a. Veronica plunges to her death just as John Ross is seen leaving her hotel.

How they are able to cram so much material is such a short period of time is amazing. It’s so intense that several times while watching I thought, oh, this is the cliffhanger, only to look at the time and realize there’s more from where that came from. Pregnancy, blackmail, thievery, arrests, hidden pasts, and now … murder – the first of the season – all within 44 minutes.

That’s not all, Chris goes to Elena asking for her back, but she rejects him, telling him to go to Rebecca and the upcoming baby. Sue Ellen also pays a visit to Elena asking her to help her son John Ross get out of trouble with these foreign oil investors. Plus, Bobby (Patrick Duffy) is arrested for assaulting Ann’s (Brenda Strong) ex husband, who claims to have the dish on Ann.

All the while we see calm, cool and collected J.R. taking phone calls from his Dallas spy as to what’s been going on. J.R. doesn’t fret over anything. In fact, the man wouldn’t shake even if he stood beneath a bridge during an earthquake. He will not be beat, always confident that whatever he wants will work out for him in the end.

Ah, if only that were true for all of us. As this episode concludes, we see the one man taking the greatest grunt of all of J.R.’s genetics and deeds, John Ross, whisked away by police for questioning of the murder. Ah, all in a day on Southfork. Thankfully we don’t live on Southfork!
