Whenever a show continually takes chances and pushes the envelope, some times that can result in a misfire, which is what the new COMMUNITY episode “Contemporary Impressionists” feels like.

It brings the study group at Greendale College back together after a holiday break (unsure how this fits into the episode order, but it seems like this is what should have aired last week, but oh, well) with new dilemmas arising.

Jeff (Joel McHale) saw a new therapist over the break who prescribed a new anti-anxiety medication for him, but Britta (Gillian Jacobs) says that medicine could make his ego get even more out of control.

Meanwhile, Abed (Danny Pudi) has gotten himself into a bad habit – he’s in over his head in debt after paying for celebrity impersonators to re-enact scenes from movies with him. His legs about to be broken because he’s $3000 in debt, but if the entire study group agrees to play various celebrities at an upcoming event, the debt will be wiped clean.

Insane results ensue, with Jeff getting out of control and Pierce (Chevy Chase) resigning himself to being a fat Burt Reynolds (on the impersonation side).

It’s the ending though that gets really dark when the friendship of Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed is tested when Troy is disappointed that after all he did to try to save Abed from getting his legs broken, ends up getting in debt again by renting out more impersonators. Abed is somewhat heartbroken by getting a lecture from Troy and enters the Dreamatorium in their apartment complex — alone. There, in the holographic spaceship, Abed comes face to face with the anti-Abed. Or maybe evil Abed, or who knows who.

What this means to Abed’s sanity is a mystery, but it is the most intriguing thing to happen in this episode. I can’t wait to see where this Dreamatorium is heading.

Otherwise, there are some occasional laughs, but the episode as a whole is not up to the high standards fans have to expect from COMMUNITY. You win some, you lose some, but even lukewarm COMMUNITY is still far more entertaining that NBC’s WHITNEY and ARE YOU THERE CHELSEA? combined.
