One of the most promising new comedies last Spring was the Christian Slater starrer BREAKING IN on Fox. It’s a series that focused on a security firm run by the brash, unpredictable and enigma-like Oz (Slater) and the wacky employees he has.

The series struggled throughout the seven episodes to find the right balance and tone. While I appreciated what the series did, it didn’t bowl me over story-wise even though I loved the cast and characters.

Fox was on the bubble about what to do with BREAKING IN. It was cancelled and then un-cancelled when they couldn’t find anything better to put on its place. They also did some retooling for its current Season 2.

The end result – better, still not funnier, but there’s tons of room to grow now.

With “The Contra Club,” the series big addition is Megan Mullally as the office’s new receptionist temp Veronica. The thing is, she’s not really a temp, but the head of bigger corporation that wants to buy Contra Security. She’s there to secretly get info on the employees to determine if this company is worth purchasing.

The core cast returns from last year including expert hacker Cameron (Bret Harrison), tech guy Cash (Alphonso McAuley) and thief Melanie (Odette Annable). Though, Annable’s appearances will be limited this season since she became a regular on that other Fox series HOUSE.

BREAKING IN partakes in some clever jabs at Fox’s indecision toward the series – particularly with the opening lines uttered by Oz. And the show moves pretty quickly through its paces.

Mullally is a welcome addition, adding a nice bit of kookiness to the show. She blends in perfectly with the cast, and this should give the series a nice jump-start especially since it will give Slater someone just as quirky as he is to play off of. The big question will be how Annable’s absence will affect the show. She is one of the key pieces to the ensemble, so to have her sidelined might have some bigger ramifications if they don’t stop gap that hole. Erin Richards has been added as Veronica’s assistant, so we’ll see how she integrates into the mix.

BREAKING IN is one of the show’s you root for, because you know, if they can work out all the kinks, figure out how to make it work properly, it can be an incredibly popular and funny show. They’ve got the cast and occasionally they’ve got the comedy, now it’s just pulling it all together into a cohesive whole. This premiere was a step in the right direction – let’s see if the show can defy all odds and secure a third season.
