The big question when TNT announced they were bringing back the iconic 1980s soap opera DALLAS a weekly series, was whether it would continue to mythology previously established or do its own thing.

At TNT’s TCA press tour, Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), explains that it’s “not a remake or a reboot, but a continuation of the Ewing family.”

Executive producer Cynthia Cidre who developed the new incarnation emphasizes this mandate, which is why the new series not only focuses on the next generation of Ewings but brings back core cast members Patrick Duffy (Bobby), Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) and Larry Hagman (J.R.).

“I was not going to pretend [the original] show did not exist,” says Cidre. “Someone [on staff] is researching all 357 episodes. We want to honor the original show and original conception of the show. It’s history.”

Executive producer Michael M. Robin says he couldn’t imagine making a remake of the original series especially since “we’ve seen 357 episodes with these lovely actors.”

“Thank goodness they’re still around and wanted to do the show,” adds Robin. “It seemed natural to catch up with the Ewing family 20 years later and what happened in the 20 years since the show went off the air. It’s a very natural transition. The script Cynthia wrote for the pilot honors all the intricate elements of what DALLAS was in the past. We weren’t here to take this in some other whole new place. We’re honoring the past, freshening it up for now and making it really compelling with a remarkable group of actors.”
