While there’s been a lot of hype for the new NBC midseason musical drama SMASH (and yes, the show more than lives up to it), today at the NBC TCA press tour, Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt says the series is very important to the network, which is why they’ve scheduled it to air after the second season of their hit reality singing competition THE VOICE on Monday nights.

SMASH is going to be very important to us,” says Greenblatt. “I don’t think it’s a make or break show for us. We’re really proud of it and what it could do. It was important to give it a lead-in. Our handicaps are with bonafide lead-ins, but we have one with THE VOICE. The strategic decision made to put those two shows together will hopefully invigorate both shows. The old adage, it only takes one show and the network will be turned around, I think maybe that was true ten years ago. In this day and age, you need four or five shows to start turning shows around, but I hope SMASH is one of those. If it isn’t, it’s not like we’ll go into receivership. We do think it’s special and we think it can break through the clutter.”
