When COMMUNITY was missing from NBC’s midseason schedule, many thought that this was the first nail in the coffin before cancellation. However, at today’s NBC TCA press tour session, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt wanted to clarify that COMMUNITY will be back once a time slot opens up.

COMMUNITY was moved to 8 a couple of years ago and that’s an incredibly competitive time slot on Thursdays,” says Greenblatt. “I’m curious what something else will do there. I don’t know if it makes sense to ask COMMUNITY to start off night again. We have a tight schedule with comedies and not a lot of places to put comedies. We tried to migrate comedies to Wednesday this year. It’s going to be looking at what happens with the six comedies we have coming for midseason and to figure out where COMMUNITY makes the most sense.”

Greenblatt also says it’s very tricky to build an audience for a series that has a niche audience.

“Unfortunately, that’s been the good news and bad news of a show like COMMUNITY,” says Greenblatt. “It has such a strong core audience, but it’s been hard to expand that audience.”

As for a fourth season, Greenblatt says it’s hard to determine its fate at this point.

“That’s a really hard question to answer at this point,” says Greenblatt. “We’re going to look at it with every show we have and the success of what pilots we have, what the schedule needs are and then make that decision closer to the upfronts.”
