People tune in to ABC’s DANCING WITH THE STARS, which has its season finale tonight,  to of course watch the dancing and the stars. However, the show just wouldn’t be the same without its host and executive producer Tom Bergeron.

Bergeron, as urbane and affable in person as he is during his hosting duties, takes some time to answer questions about the current season, DANCING WITH THE STARS: ALL-STARS, and the show’s history overall.

ASSIGNMENT X: When did you know which stars were going to be on the ALL-STARS season?

TOM BERGERON: I [found out] a few days ahead of [when the audience did], on August 13th, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, when we announced the pairings.

AX: Do you have a favorite season among those that have gone by?

BERGERON: I think Season 2, and the reason was, we didn’t know if we had a going concern, or we had something that at best would be a summer show, until Season 2. Because we did the six-week first season, then we did the dance-offs, the one-off special in September, and that didn’t rate all that well. So I worried that, “Okay, we may have overshot our interest level here.” [laughs] And then when Season 2 came on in February of ’06, the numbers were so strong. And then it just was a great season. But from the standpoint of the history of the show, that was when we knew we had something that could be a going concern.

AX: Has DANCING WITH THE STARS evolved the way you expected it to when you started, or has it taken very unexpected turns?

BERGERON: Yes. It’s grown and expanded much more. I thought in all honesty we’d be a summer show, we’d be a six-week, every summer a little [filler show]. So this has been much bigger than I would have predicted.

AX: But in terms of the mechanics of making the show …?

BERGERON: Oh, yeah. You just look at the set we have now and the production values that they are able to mount every week on a live show. It’s astounding.

AX: Have you ever been star-struck by anybody, either among the competitors or the singing/judging/audience guests?

BERGERON: Yeah. Not star-struck – I’m fans of a lot of these people, so I don’t get star-struck, per se, but I certainly get excited when certain people show up or they’re in the audience.

AX: Do you ever make song suggestions?

BERGERON: No.

AX: Is there ever anything in the show where you think, “Gee, I wish I could get to do that,” whether it’s the dancing or the day to day judging?

BERGERON: Not really. I’m pretty happy. I like where I am in the show.

AX: You’re perfectly happy with how it all flows.

BERGERON: That’s right. I let them do their job and they let me do mine [laughs].
