THE DESCENDANTS – This is the most cheerful film that you will see any time soon. In fact, if you are in a good mood and want to come out of it this is the film to see. George Clooney stars in this film about a real estate attorney whose wife goes into a coma after an accident. When her condition worsens he must deal with the stress of letting her go, his daughters that don’t really like him and a host of in-laws that are sharks waiting for a wealthy deal to go through. But there is more. Turns out his wife was cheating on him and instead of being pissed about it, decides to get to know the dude she was screwing a little better in order to learn more about why she did it. Again, not the most upbeat fare for lifting your spirits about humanity and family. But since this was nominated for a slew of Oscars, chances are good many people will enjoy the drama of it all.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS – Now, on the flip side you have yet another take on the classic tale of the three France fighting champions that must decipher a plot against the king that includes England and the priest looking to take him out. Interesting that the main actors that are well-know are more bit players in this rather than the main characters and not surprisingly these actors bring the most to the film including Orlando Bloom as the vibrant Duke of Buckingham and Mila Jovovich as Milady (also complete with a great slow-motion sequence of her in a corset). Surprisingly, D’Artagnan (played by relative newcomer Logan Lerman) does a pretty good job as the cocky yet talented fourth Musketeer that helps them uncover the plot. While I’m not a fan of all the rehashing that is being done in Hollywood of taking classic stories and just repurposing them again and again until our eyes bleed, this one isn’t too shabby with some new takes on the classic fare and some pretty damn good special effects. This makes for a great rental on Blu-ray to capture these moments in all their glory.

WALLACE & GROMIT’S WORLD OF INVENTION – I’ve been a huge fan of WALLACE & GROMIT from the first film that came to the states a number of years ago. The fact that everything is now done digitally in terms of animated movies, you forget just how cool stop-motion animation can be when it is in the right hands. This is indeed the right hands. This collection includes all six episodes of the mini series from the BBC on both Blu-ray and DVD. They also included six different features on how to build your own crazy contraptions as some of the ones shown in the series here. A very good series for fans and for children.

DOCTOR WHO: THE TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN – SPECIAL EDITION – The second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) along with his companions Jamie and Victoria begin what would become one of the ultimate staples in Who lore in the Cybermen. After traveling to Telos, once the home of the Cybermen, they join an expedition to find out what happened to the technologically enhanced creatures and why they no longer are around today. But when they enter the tomb, they awaken the long-dead creatures and must find a way to survive. This was released once before but now it includes a new audio commentary from the actors as well as some of the crew.

DOCTOR WHO: THE THREE DOCTORS – SPECIAL EDITION – Another re-release of one of the classic tales that gathered all of the first actors to play the iconic Who character – Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell – in order to solve a mystery involving the Time Lords and a Black Hole. Again, the new feature here is an audio commentary with the actors and a making of featurette not included in the first release.

DOCTOR WHO: THE FACE OF EVIL – Another Tom Baker story as the Doctor and an alien world that’s more jungle than anything else and the efforts of the Doctor and the first appearance of Leela they must learn why two factions are clashing and why the Doctor seems to be one of the people the tribes are against from the beginning – calling him evil.

DOCTOR WHO: THE ROBOTS OF DEATH – SPECIAL EDITION – The third re-release this week also featuring Baker as the Doctor and Leela. This follows THE FACE OF EVIL as Leela is still new to the time traveling game and is thrown into the thick of it when they visit a deserted world where only a small crew is mining and using robots for every task. The problem is that each one of them is getting murdered one by one by the robots and someone is to blame. The re-release includes a new audio commentary with Baker and others as well as the legacy extras.

NEVERLAND – SyFy’s original mini-series makes its debut on DVD and Blu-ray taking the classic Peter Pan fairytale and twisting it much the same way they did to TIN MAN and some of the other classics from the network. They do have some interesting ideas here with Peter’s ties to Hook and Anna Friel being one of the bad girls as a pirate queen. But damn is the CGI bad. I think most people wouldn’t knock SyFy so much if they just upped their effects budgets some more or at the very least hired some different people to make it look at least presentable.

THE KILLING SEASON ONE | © 2012 Fox Home Entertainment

THE KILLING: SEASON ONE – Speaking of shows that centered around one underlying theme, THE KILLING focused on one simple question: Who killed Rosie Larsen? Unfortunately for some fans, the end result from Season One may not have been what they were hoping for. However, the show is returning for a second season and maybe that will help in terms of the overall story. Taken from a European series of the same name, AMC gave the show its own voice and earned another notch on the belt as one of the best cable networks going delivering the best shows. Check it out before Season Two starts.
