WAREHOUSE 13 still remains one of my favorite “fun” genre series that I can watch, enjoy, and not have to follow year’s worth of inter-connecting plotlines and conspiracies. I like the fact that the show runners and writers have kept the series fresh, light, and entertaining during its three year run.

This week’s episode “Queen for a Day” is no exception. Plus it does what so many genre shows get to do – bring in guest stars from other popular genre series! Jeri Ryan of STAR TREK: VOYAGER fame joins the cast this week as Pete’s (Eddie McClintock) ex-wife Amanda, and of course she ends up smack in the middle of a case involving a Warehouse artifact. Pete and Myka (Joanne Kelly) have to crash Pete’s wife’s wedding to her new husband to save everybody and to get the artifact safely back to the Warehouse.

I really like the creativity that the writers use to conjure up completely unique artifacts week after week. This week was one of the most complex and intriguing being a mechanical bee hive from ancient Egyptian times, that releases an enchanted queen bee which then stings a host and they become a queen bee of sorts, placing everyone under their power that they touch. Of course the artifact comes with the duality that all of the people under the power of the queen go nuts and do what they think is best to protect her.

Again, continuing the trend of this season, Claudia (Allison Scagliotti) and Jinks (Aaron Ashmore) are also hot on the trial of an artifact, but this time it’s Ulysses S. Grant’s flask, and the chase leads them to a Civil War reenactment. I really like the inter-play between these two characters, and it’s not just because Jinks is a gay character (but I am a little bit biased because of that fact). The two of them have a unique repartee that is similar but different to the repartee that Myka and Pete enjoy. There are some fantastic LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY references in this episode between Jinks and Claudia, and we finally have started to get some more of Jink’s back story.

It was recently brought to my attention by a fellow long time viewer of this series that they thought WAREHOUSE 13 had gotten too silly and was spending too much time making jokes and being campy. I honestly don’t see that. This series has always had a light side, and spends a portion of the episodes being funny as well as action packed. I have always thought that was part of its charm. I think that like all series you have to be careful to keep some kind of balance between all of the parts of the narrative to make sure that people stay engaged while watching and want to come back week after week, but I feel that WAREHOUSE always manages to find the balance between action, drama, humor, and sometimes even a bit of sadness.
