Why is THE VAMPIRE DIARIES like crack? I have no idea. I can’t get enough of this show. When I started watching it, I had finally decided to give it a shot, and I wasn’t all that hot to trot for it, but then after maybe two episodes I was hooked and was completely sucked in to all of the drama and multiple layered plots of the characters and the overreaching arcs of the series.

This new season has been one of the strongest so far, with writers willing to take characters in directions that may not be as sunny and bright as some of the things that have gone before. We’re seeing a blurring of the lines of what makes a character ‘good’ and what happens to good people when they are forced to do more than questionable things to protect themselves or people they love. Honestly, a lot of folks will instantly assume I mean Stefan (Paul Wesley), but a lot of other characters are being forced to make tough choices that don’t really paint them in a stellar ‘good guy’ light.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) is still trying to make Damon (Ian Somerhalder) come to heel in this latest episode “Disturbing Behavior”, but he’s still resisting. He does have a valid point in yelling at her that he is NOT Stefan, and really do we want him to be basically a neutered version of himself? Part of the reason viewers (myself included) love Damon is because he is such a bad boy, and he’s unpredictable. Who knew he was just going to snap Alaric’s (Matt Davis) neck and storm off? The fact that he was there for him with a drink when he woke up was a softening of Damon, but all of these qualities are what make him more fun!

Speaking of Alaric, I had in the first few episodes felt bad that he was adrift with nothing really to do on the show. Now he’s found a purpose and I can’t help but feeling that this is a bad thing. In joining the founder’s council, it is going to cause problems for all of our local supernatural folks down the line. In fact, I would be willing to bet that he’s turning against a lot of the vamps and werewolves that he has fought beside in the past. It’s sort of inevitable that this path will get him killed, but only time will tell.

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) has got girl trouble to the max now that Anna (Malese Jow) has gotten his full attention and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) has shown back up in town. How do you reconcile your love for two different women when one is dead? I guess this is going to give a whole new meaning to having a threesome even when Jeremy can’t see or hear Anna when he doesn’t want to.

Caroline’s (Candice Accola) dad, Bill (Jack Coleman) reveals that he can’t be compelled, and even though he is leaving town in this episode, I know he’ll be back and with reinforcements. It’s sad to me that he can’t just love his daughter and accept what she is. I mean she saved his life from Damon.

Then there’s the cliffhanger on this episode with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) carting Stefan back to Mystic Falls. Maybe this will be a big deal, and maybe it’s just a bit of a red herring. We’ll see in the next episode!
