Things continue to heat up as the second season of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES pushes forward. More truths are revealed about the nature of the curse that needs to be broken to free with the vampires or the werewolves from their particular side of the binding. Following up on the events of the last episode, this week’s show “Crying Wolf” takes the initiative to rid Mystic Falls of at least one of its supernatural elements.

Let’s get one thing straight. The werewolves are like the white trash of the supernatural world. They travel around in a beat-up Winnebago and they only show up to start crap and try to kill anybody else with any kind of supernatural abilities. They of course hate vampires, especially Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) Salvatore, since the brothers did away with the only wolf in town earlier in the season. Now the wolf pack in town is being led by Jules (Michaela McManus) and they manage in one single episode to pretty much get wiped out by Original Vampire Elijah (Daniel Gillies) with a little help from Stefan.

So Jules hits the road with tail firmly tucked between her legs and takes one of the series regulars with her, Tyler (Michael Trevino). Tyler can’t cope with being a wolf, and being embroiled in all of the supernatural hoo ha, so adios! Which is sad, because I liked who that character was becoming, but he’ll probably be back before it’s all said and done. After all, they still need a wolf to complete the ritual.

Bonnie (Katerina Graham) finally decided to give in and take the plunge with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) which is good and bad. It’s great that they finally developed those characters enough to the point where they can have a relationship and be a focal point for the series, but Jeremy is like Jessica Fletcher on MURDER SHE WROTE, he has the kiss of death and all of this other girlfriends on the show have taken a big dirt nap.

Speaking of relationships, Stefan and Elena (Nina Dorbrev) head out to her parents lake house for a romantic getaway which yields surprises that Elena’s dad was indeed a vampire hunter (as a closet full of anti-vamp weapons attests) and then they get attacked by a werewolf. Two things of note here. When is Elena going to actually start carrying some kind of weapon all the time, even if it is just a stun gun? I feel like she wanders around with a lamb chop tied to her neck in a den full of lions. The other thing is the show makes a big point of showing how keen vampire hearing is, but it is obscenely easy to sneak up on them. Both of the Salvatore brothers are attacked with werewolves ‘sneaking’ up on them. Do they just have a blind (so to speak) spot for wolves?

The episode rounds out with the Salvatore brothers finding out from Bonnie that Elijah has been planning to sacrifice Elena all along, since that is the only time Klaus (the uber-vamp) is vulnerable. Which is a surprise to everyone but Elena, who seems hell bent on sacrifice. The brothers do have a supposed weapon to kill Klaus, but we have to see him on the show first.

The drama is high and so are the stakes as we move further and further into the twists and turns that present themselves to the people of Mystic Falls, and the question remains who will be left standing at the end of this HUGE mess?
