It’s date night on THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING with the episode “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Both Chloe (Skyler Samuels) and her mom, Meredith (Amy Pietz) are prepping for big important moves forward in their lives.

Meredith is going out on her first official date with a man she worked with on a project and Chloe is going to the Rezza Capital Art Gala with Brian (Grey Damon). Of course, Chloe doesn’t know that Brian’s father is part of and more than likely the head of the San Francisco chapter of The Order, so the idea of going to an event he is sponsoring is kind of like assisted suicide.

Of course in the midst of Chloe’s big date / not a date just friends, her usual sidekicks Amy (Grace Phipps) and Paul (Ki Hong Lee), land themselves in hot water. Amy decides that Paul is not her ideal boyfriend and goes out with a kid who is rigging a high stakes illegal poker game to pay for MIT. Yeah. That’s a great example of who you should date. So as usual everything goes due south and Chloe has to be the superhero to the rescue, this time in her mother’s dress.

This whole situation begs the question of which came first the chicken or the egg? Before Chloe had her superpowers, did her friends land themselves in such tight situations that they had to physically be rescued? It honestly seems that since Chloe got juiced up as a Mai, her friends just have less of a sense of self-preservation and tend to blunder in where they normally would not have gone. All of this seems like a side effect of being friends with a superhero There is a discussion about Amy taking risks since Chloe is, but it seems like this might be a formula for all hero characters with normal friends. It certainly seemed that way on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.  This might bear further exploration.

Alek (Benjamin Stone) has abruptly shifted his focus off of Chloe and onto the new Mai girl in school. He wastes absolutely no time whisking her off to a closet in the school for some hot and heavy make out time, and then later ends up snogging with her on a rooftop while Chloe attends the Gala and runs off to save her friends. I like Alek, don’t get me wrong, but he always seems to get to whatever situation is happening at the last minute, when he really isn’t needed anymore. They need to give him more proactive stuff to do instead of reactive.

Brian’s dad makes a passing comment to Chloe at the gala, but I’m not 100% sold on the idea that he actually knew who she was. His concubine, Simone (Jolene Andersen) however took a very noticeable interest in Chloe and everything she did. I have no doubt  she has her own plans for our little Uniter.

Brian and Chloe break up (or wait were they ever dating) in a very teen angst way at the end with Chloe running away crying and Brian left holding her scarf. Their love affair really honestly irritates me since she can’t even kiss him without killing him.

The series continues to move the plot forward little bit by little bit. The big problem with the show is it gets mired too much in the teen angst drama and hasn’t found the balance between that and the supernatural elements. There really aren’t that many episodes left of the season, but hopefully the remaining episodes will be more balanced between action, mythology, and drama.
