Even though Simon Cowell’s new singing competition series THE X FACTOR airs on Fox in the fall while AMERICAN IDOL (which he used to be on) airs in the Spring, he admitted today at a Summer 2011 Television Critics Association session that he still has the desire to beat IDOL.

“You don’t enter something going for the silver medal,” says Cowell who managed to beat POP IDOL in the U.K. with THE X FACTOR previously. “You do it because you want to be number one. We’re going to throw everything at this to make it the best show on TV.”

With four judges (Cowell, L.A. Reid, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger), no real age limits and the ability to have groups, THE X FACTOR is poised to provide a different musical reality show voice, and Cowell admits THE X FACTOR can exist alongside IDOL and even NBC’s new hit reality singing competition series THE VOICE. It doesn’t hurt that the winner is guaranteed a $5 million cash prize.

“I see it in the same way as movies, in one year you could have ten great movies an din certain years you don’t,” says Cowell. “The idea that there would only be one singing competition series in America was crazy. And sure enough THE VOICE came along last year and did a good job. We’re coming on [in the fall], where there aren’t any of these shows except for DANCING [WITH THE STARS]. It feels like a good time. It’s a new decade and we want to find a new audience and design and make the show for people who have never seen a show like this before.”
