Former MAD ABOUT YOU star Paul Reiser debuted his new comedy series THE PAUL REISER SHOW on NBC last night and this morning he was at NBC’s Summer Press Day to talk about the show’s evolution and returning to television.

“I wasn’t thinking of doing a show and they said, ‘why don’t you come up with a show’  and this came to me,” he says.

The reason for the long delay in between TV projects wasn’t due to the lack of opportunities, he just was ready to “sit down.”

“We had a wonderfully long run after MAD ABOUT YOU,” says Reiser. “The plan was to really sit back. I did a bunch of things, but I wasn’t hungering to jump back to get back into a TV routine. This came up in a very sane way which is why it worked so well.”

Although the series has a improvisational feel, Reiser says, “It’s very scripted” except of course working with Larry David (from CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM) who made an appearance opposite him in last night’s episode.

“When we called Larry David, he said, ‘I don’t want to learn lines, I want to improvise,’” recalls Reiser. “I was intimidated by it. He created that art form. I felt getting into that scene it would [being in there with] Ali, just keep moving. When we finally edited it, it didn’t look different from other scenes, which were very scripted.”

THE PAUL REISER SHOW airs Thursday nights on NBC.
