While accepting Dr. Donald A. Reed Award at the 37th Annual Saturn Awards presented to him by longtime collaborator Roland Emmerich, writer-director-producer Dean Devlin spoke with ASSIGNMENT X about  the fourth season of LEVERAGE (airing Sunday nights on TNT) and what to expect this summer.

ASSIGNMENT X: “The 10 L’il Grifters Job” is such a great concept for a LEVERAGE episode … especially with the nod to Timothy Hutton’s dad Jim Hutton who played Ellery Queen [in the 1975 TV series of the same name].

DEAN DEVLIN: Everyone in that episode got to dress up as their favorite detective, so when Nate Ford [Hutton] walks on to the screen, Sophie [Gina Bellman] asks “who are you supposed to be?” and he goes “Ellery Queen, the greatest detective of all time.” It’s a pretty awesome moment.

AX: Has anything changed for Season 4 of LEVERAGE?

DEVLIN: It’s our best season. We have a new influx of writers this year who were ready to break the mold. This season is a lot more emotional then ever before. Things we go after are very different. We go after an actual human heart for one. Fans are going to be surprised where it goes and people who have never seen the show are going to find this very engaging. We’re on before FALLING SKIES, so  it’s a very interesting genre night for TNT. They’ve never tried anything like that. It feels like a good match. And you know how much I love Noah [Wyle].

AX: Do you have a Big Bad for this season?

DEVLIN: Leon Rippy has a recurring character that I liken as kind of a Warren Buffett character. The ways in which he is bad are very unusual. It’s not one of our typical villains.

AX: Any other big guest stars?

DEVLIN:  Danny Glover does a guest star for us and knocks it out of the park [“The Van Gough Job” airing July 24]. When you see it, it’s such an important actor for this generation. The guy could read the phone book and could have me crying.
